Weirdest problem i've ever experienced w/ hvx200

Hey guys,

So with over 2 + years of hvx200 I've never experienced this kind of a problem before...

Basically when we are shooting (DV tape, p2, or FS) at any mode, our camera after a random amount of rolling will suddenly lock up and we are unable to stop recording, access menus, or even power it off. The only way to stop the camera is to remove the battery.

Has anyone experienced this? I think something must be fried internally but since its so random when the camera stops working, sending it in for repair on first glance shows all things to be working properly.

Much thanks in advance,

Ian

its a camera for work so its under warranty, im pretty sure that something must have fried or glitched out internally but was curious if anyone else had experienced this kind of thing.

The only thing we can think that might have triggered it would have been when we tried syncing two HVX200s on a commercial shoot (via the process outlined by barry) static maybe?

*shrug*

Ian,

Just for the heck of it you might want to try to upgrade the firmware to the latest version.

I was thinking of messing around with syncing two HVX's here just to have the experience of having done it.
If this possibly is a syncing issue, I'll hold off on playing around.

Barry, do you think its a syncing issue in your case as well?

Thanks, Mike

Before you send it in, you might try and re-install the firmware. I'm just guessing here, but something to try???

Check all of your buttons, primarily one of the curser buttons on the top panel. If one of them is jammed or stuck, it will confuse the camera causing behavior similar to what you are describing.

Let me know what happens.

Best regards,

Andrew Hoffman

No, there's something just royally shorting out. In my case when I turn on the camera it immediately begins recording, and no force on earth can get it to stop. The REC button won't stop it, the menu button "stop" button won't stop it, and turning the power button off won't stop it. I have to yank the battery to get it to stop.

With no cards in, it can't start auto-recording (of course) but even then, the menus don't work at all. The old gal's getting tired, I guess, I used it up or something.

I had the camera turn on in P2 mode, couldn't use menus or power off. I removed the battery, restarted, it was just fine.

Well we sent the camera in for repair, ill keep everyone posted on the results. Thanks for everyones feedback.

Just curious - how many hours on those cameras locking up (barry & ianflaig)

Its sent in right now so I cant give you an exact number, however we have had it for just under a year with doing on average probably 1 or 2 commercial shoots a month.

Barry!

I had the same exact problem. Exact same problem. Exactly.

Took it to the Video Clinic in Santa Monica and they fixed it.

Not sure what the fix was, the tech said a cable came loose or something, I'm not sure if that was really the case, but my camera is fixed.

Cheers!

Sadly, I had two cameras right out of the box do almost the same thing earlier this year. Power on to 'stuck mode'. Nothing fixed it, not even the fancy little reset button.

Panasonic Technical did not have any constructive information, other than (and I kid not...) "...maybe you should buy a Sony." They offered to 'fix' them, all I had to do was pay for shipping. I returned them instead to the retailer and repurchased a fully functional HVX.

Have had no other problems since.

Barry,

I think that there is a circuit board that we have found that fixes a similar problem. It's about $300 for the part plus labor.

Let me know if you need us to take a glance at it for you.

Great...I wait till the camera is a mature product, buy it...a month later a new improved version comes out, and the model I bought has a tech time bomb in it...jeese......

I've repaired several cameras with this same problem or similar. Some won't switch modes, menus will not work, zoom creeps, and won't turn off. I've also sent many more to Panasonic for warranty repair with similar issues. The fix is to switch a couple of the flat cables inside the camera.

The parts are under $100.

Please let us know what this problem and what its solution turns out to be...if it happens to all the people responding here, chances are it is a design flaw and as such it would be better for Panasonic to remedy it _before_ warranties run out.

Great, last time I was at the clinic in Santa Monica it cost me $350 and I couldn't sit down for 2 days...
