Looking to buy a EX1 in the U.S from a reliable shop

Hi all,

I'm coming to the U.S for a shoot. Thinking about buying a EX1, but the problem is that I'm in New York and B&H is going to make me tax tax if I buy it from them. Can anyone tell me or point me to the right direction where I can get one at a good price from a legit company.

I can use my friend address in Long island and still get the rebate for the free 8gig card.

Or is anyone trying to sell one a used one.

If you physically purchase an item in a store, the store is required by law to collect on sales tax. Buy from a store, you pay tax; no way around it. BUT, if you are from a foreign country, as you are, you can reclaim some (maybe all) taxes on your departure at the airport.

As for B&H, they have *some* of the best prices in the nation, it's a little unfair. Abel Cine Tech runs similar prices and is also a great place.

Just my 2cents, viel gluck.

no you can get any tax back at the airport. Tried that one once.

How about ordering online from a legit company from out of N.Y state.

I search around and found this Promax company. They are a sponsor in another forum called creativecow . Anyone had any experience from them?

Try these guys - they're reputable and cheap and in Illinois. Sony authorized dealer.

I bought mine here and they've been very helpful with warranty issues (vignetting etc.)

Also, they're the only place I've seen selling "B-stock" at a discount:

I'm surprised that you can't reclaim tax duties at the airport. That seems odd. You should be able to at customs in an international port of departure.

But yes, you are right, you can order it from an out-of-state retailer and have it shipped to you in New York to avoid state sales tax. I don't know any "off the top of my head" that would sell the EX1, but I'm sure they're out there. The west coast is a good bet.

But beware, if the price looks too good to be true (ie lower than B&H) it's probably not legit. Online/Mail order places like to break up the packages and sell pieces individually.

This is absolutely not true in the US. There is no refund in sales tax (which is collected by state and local governments - not by the US government).

In European countries you can get back VAT at the airport.

B stock are officially sanctioned, refurbished (when necessary) returned or opened merchandise which is essentially new but can no longer be called "new." In the case of the EX1, probably cameras returned for the vignetting issue and (presumably) fixed by Sony.

When I've worked for Sony (Pictures) they offer us employees B-stock of their entire product lines (big items like plasmas, etc.) and it's usually a good deal.

I've never seen B-stock offered to the general public before.

(BTW - if it were me, knowing what we know about the Ex1, and the fact that it's such a new product, I would steer clear of B-Stock)

Hmm... Louisiana does, but it seems ONLY Louisiana. My bad.
You're right, state governments don't have a tax-reclamation programs. Too bad.
Ordering from out-of-state is the best option to avoid taxes...for everyone, not just visitors. You'd think they would try to plug up that loophole.

If someone is selling a less than a year old used EX1 camera, what is a reasonable price?

I don't know . But the B stock with new warranty goes for $5900. And I ask the sale rep and he says that they are not from the batch that had vignetting problems.
