Color Grading the EX Footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3

Now that the new Adobe CS3 EX1 support is here, I have been delving more deeply into manipulating my footage. I find that the EX1 footage grades so nicely, you can do just about anything and it behaves gracefully and the results are often wonderful.

I made some adjustments to the contrast, saturation and color cast in this shot of Kent Falls, looking down a path:

The original image was "hi-fi" --very realistic. But after grading, the image, though no longer an accurate representation of the real scene, looks more like a scene out of Lord of the Rings. I like what I'm seeing. And Adobe must have done much code-optimization, as I can do something else I could not do in the old version: playback unrendered effects in realtime. This makes it a joy to be creative and try this look and that look.

Another thing I found out is that I can take a small section of a 720P frame, blow it up 200% and unsharp mask it and it still looks pretty darned good! Tried that with HDV last year and it looked like garbage. The EX1 can survive upscaling for the purpose of creating 'faux zooms'. Simply amazing.

Woweee... lol no offence but big deal the fast colour corrector omg - what a revolution :)

What would be cool to see is some nice magic bullet grading, or adapter footage with post diffusion and cc!

What many people don't realize is that you CAN do some pretty good color grading with the tools already in Premiere. What IS a revolution is that with this update, you can now do it in REALTIME. A formerly "useless" feature becomes practical to use now.

In some instances, curves can be more suitable. There are several color control tools in Premiere. Definately worth exploring!
