Exciting Sony NAB announcements

I have been very interested in this camera, but am worried about the footage I saw ruined from a helicopter (the rolling shutter article on this site). I read some articles that say if you shoot shots from vibrating locations such as helicopters or moving vehicles, or if you do fast pans, or have fast motion shots, you will see these articles. However, I've not seen any EX1 users complaining about these problems. I spoke to a cameraman today (who was with a team doing a documentary in a heliport I was in), and he said that Sony would not release a camera if that was much of a problem. I really can't trust the manufacturer in this instance. I'm going to try to get to a dealer to test one, but I'd love to hear from an owner about this.

I figured the 60fps would make it pretty hard to wobble or skew, but I still wouldn't bet $13,000 on it! Any experiences?

Search the forum, this topic has been drilled to the nth degree.
The bottom line is the EX1 has artifacts from the CMOS rolling shutter.

If this is an issue, look the other way. There's plenty of CCD cameras to choose from. Panasonic's new HPX170 looks like it might be a decent camera.

Thanks Stevet,

I'd been searching, but couldn't really see where anyone who'd used the EX1 discussed the issue. But I'm probably just not very good at using this search engine. Anyway, I continued searching and did manage to find a Sony promo video posted on the boards which seems to lay the issue to rest. It was of a team using the EX1 to shoot an airshow with lots of action and vibration. So it does indeed look as though I'm going to be replacing my HVX.

Thanks again,

Lawrence
