DV Rack -- anybody use this? (any good?)

Depends on what mode you're recording in. If you're using DV or HDV, a half an hour will be about 6 gigabytes or so. In DVCPRO-HD on the new forthcoming HVX-capable version of DV Rack, obviously DV50 will be twice that, and DVCPRO-HD up to twice that again.

Does it take up a lot of space? I'm dying to get this program, but I am worried that i won't have enough hard drive space. Approximately how many MBs would a half hour of video recorded on DV Rack take up??

I have my setup to record on a external firewire/USB HD so it is not conflicting with my internal on my HP laptop. But of course you will need 2 firewire or a firewire/USB2.0 setup not sharing the same port to avoid conflicts. Overall it is a excellent product..just make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

I've done a number of shoots with this program. I love it. Here is a shot from a shoot I did recently.

Minimum 1024x768, more is better in that you can see more of the tools on the screen but it doesn't scale so 1920x1200 just makes everything small.

For an HD100 user, a 1280x720 display would be nice because you can alt+enter and get a full-screen, pixel-accurate display.

Thanks Barry. would a 16x9 screen size be better for the laptop screen? I assume that what the "w" is on the "wxga"....

Makes no difference as far as the video preview goes. But it allows a less vertical arrangement of all the DV Rack components.

I was impressed, but am hoping some of you out there might have some actual experience using it and know if it's worth 130 bucks.

Yes, yes and YES! A solid product. Highly recommend.

Can't stay quiet on this one....dvrack is incredible. I have shot several shoots recently and was in heaven. I just shot a documentary with a DP who really knows his stuff, he hadn't seen dvrack before but seemed really impressed. Not to mention the fact the it made me look really good having all right the tools on a laptop....tech savvy(: I think the coolest feature has to be direct to hard and how you can toggle directly after the take, we used that quite a bit. Left us all feeling totaly secure. can't go wrong with this one!

I remember a similar free application that would flip the image as well as capture. Anyone recall what this software for mac is?

for monitoring purposes i've been using Monitor Magic (the version that doesn't capture....for monetary reasons) and I'm thrilled with it, great for waveform monitoring etc. This combined with the Zebra and Marker features of the HVX makes our job a whole lot easier.
