"Berlin" - A Norm Sanders Film - DVD NOW AVAILABLE

Just had the main BTS featurette reviewed by a trusted source & got the okay on it. Working on some smaller ones now. Authoring of the DVD itself should prove pretty simple. It's just the main content of the DVD that I'm trying to ensure is valuable for all who acquire it.

Feel like a marathon runner that sees the finish line....

GEE WHIZ this festival is expensive to submit to! Basically, I get to pay $70 + packaging & shipping costs just to be able to have someone at that festival office watch BERLIN and decide if it's good enough to show or not.

Since one never knows the taste of the individual that could be watching it, I feel like this is an expensive gamble. That said, I do feel pretty strongly about this piece, and I'm by far my worst critic, so the film does stand on its own. Hmmmm, submit away, I guess! :)

Since the full DVD and replication process won't have be ready in time for submitting to several festivals, I just purchased an external Lightscribe DVD setup & 50 discs so that I can send off professional looking packages, without having to marker on the disc with a felt tip.

Jeremy Tuttle is nearly finished with all graphics (poster, DVD, etc.), and I still need to cut the trailer to get to Herman, as I'd love for that to be on the DVD as well, if possible.

So far the completed DVD will include the following:
  1. Interactive & Animated/motion Menu(s), with scene selection, etc.
  2. Completed film, shot HD, and color corrected in 32 bit (15 min)
  3. The Making Of BERLIN featurette (17 min - yeah, longer than the actual film!)
  4. Incentive To Be Involved: The Story of BERLIN featurette (8-9 min)
  5. The Look, Lighting & Camera set up of BERLIN featurette (TBD)
  6. Bloopers/Out-takes (TBD)
  7. Director's commentary (13-14 min, optional audio channel during film)
  8. Behind the Scenes Video montage (TBD)
  9. Behind the Scenes picture gallery (100+ photos)
  10. Trailer A (TBD)
  11. Trailer B (TBD)

Patience. :)

For anyone who's interested, I've just updated my MySpace page so that you can hear the score (mixed with a couple of variations of the theme at the beginning) that Herman put together for the film.

It's pretty incredible. :)

OMG. Norm. WOW! I just watched your MySpace link...

What a HUGE production!

I saw the enormous list of players on your 1st post but to see them all in this clip is truly amazing! You sir, are a big time director!!!

Really great work, Norm. Amazing.

Best,

Thanks Ted!! Sorry for the delay, but I actually just saw this post. :)

I've been having SEVERE technical issues with rendering out the master of the film (it's been completed for quite some time now). After some extensive trial & error, and working with Sony support for Vegas, which I'm cutting on, I found the culprit. I had a huge 50MB+ PSD file that's a still image (a matte, created from a building we shot) ... the system was choking on it, and refused to work through it. Saved it as a lower res JPEG, and it solved the problem.

So, after 30 hours of rendering later (two pass, MPEG2), I've got the film available to send out. Just also rec'd the Lightscribe DVD buner & DVD's today, so I'll be working on getting a few copies out the door tomorrow.

Last night, as I was trying to slow my brain down so I could sleep, I figured out the bulk of the trailer in my head of order, what I'd like to be seen/heard, etc. I can tell you this ... the ending of the trailer is going to be GREAT, hehe.

I'll hope to have an edit of it to Herman in a couple of days, as I should get some good time tomorrow & this weekend to cut it.

Thanks for your patience, everyone.

WHEW!!! That must have been a real scare! I am glad that you got that worked out.

This really looks great Norm.

Best of luck with this!

Ted

Hi Ian, Herman is working on scoring the trailer(s) now, and as soon as those are finished, the DVD will go into pre-order availability, as I'll have the master off for replication.

yommytacoe, the Swaztika flag was provided by our Historical/Tech Consultant & Wardrobe Designer, Jay Lance.

The banners hanging on the sides of the door were created by our Art Department.

I love the cinematography. It looks really good.

The audio though is hard to hear. I couldn't make out a lot of the lines in the VO, partly because they're indistinct, partly because they partly overlap with the other dialogs. The part at the beginning when the guy was arguing with his wife (?) I couldn't catch what she said in response at all.

Huy Vu, thanks for that feedback. If it's simply the VO that's harder to hear, then I'll crank that up & bring everything else down a few notches. Otherwise, I tried hard to make sure that it wasn't overlapping with any meaningful dialogue but for a second at the most.

When she yells back at the husband, it's "To hell with Canada and the Brits!", but we wanted it to be real & not super articulated, so perhaps that's the problem there. If so, it's unfixable ... if it's simply a volume/mixing issue, then I'll need to address that ASAP.

Sure, fire away. This was a REALLY tough one for me to cut a trailer to, for some reason. Didn't want to come across as cheezy, but also didn't want to give too much away at the same time. I'm excited to have Trailer B completed, as I feel it's a stronger piece, though completely different as to what it makes you feel about the story.

Other than sound levels/mixing, not sure I'll change much if anything with Trailer A, but feel free to comment nonetheless.

Ok, only one note, at 21sec, the shot of the guy Rebecca is talking to, can he be on a beat longer? I can barely see him and he's gone... feels far too rushed. IMO :)
