Making Indpendent Film this summer, What.....

I'm shooting a film this summer and I need your guys advance.

I have the hvx200 and I'm getting the m2 redrock soon but my real question is what should I shoot in? I know it is going to be 24 fps but what setting on the hvx? 24p, 24pn, 1080i-24pa, 1080i-24p. I know what they stand for but which would you shoot your movie in and why?

any response would be a big help

thanks a lot!

No, it isn't interlaced. It's progressive. Don't be confused by the 1080i nomenclature shown on the camera menu. It is misleading.

Also, if you're using FCP, do NOT use 1080i/24p. You must use 1080i/24pa. I don't know about other NLEs.

What about if I shoot a lot of the scenes in 1080i/24pa, but I want to do some shots in 720/pn for the different frame rates. Would you be able to notice? I guess you wouldn't though because they are both 16:9 aspect ratio. So would there be a way to tell the difference?

i wouldnt be so quick to jump on the m2. there are other (and some would say - better) options out there...

and the SGPro too. There's a great thread going in the 35mm adapter forum comparing most if not all of the adapters.

I own the M2, Brevis, and the Letus Extreme (don't ask why I bought so many adapters...). Anyway, the M2 is a bit difficult to setup and loses a lot of light, the Brevis has a nice image and is easier to setup (upside down unless you get the flip module) and has less light loss. I went and shot with the Extreme since I found it to be the easiest to use, doesn't lose that much light, flips the image and is easy to setup.

That being said, make sure you budget in lights! Regardless of what adapter you use, you will need lights (even when shooting indoors during the day). I will be finishing up my feature next month and I am so happy I have a DP who knows how to light and he used A LOT OF LIGHTS!

Back when I started filming (Oct. 07) I opted to shoot 720p 24pN. I do plan on upressing to 1080p via image sequence export into Photozoom Pro 2 (a long process that could have been avoided if I had shot in 1080...). Also, the HVX200 is a bit noisy so play around with the profiles and do a search on this forum for suggestions (again, I plan on processing my darker scenes with Neat Video noise plug).

You will be happy with the HVX200 and a 35mm adapter (btw, I am selling the Brevis35 adapter if you are interested...)

Have fun and good luck with your film (ironically, my original budget for my feature was $15,000 not including equipment and that grew to $50,000; money goes fast on a film set!)

I'm shooting a feature at 720p, but that's only because of our limited budget. 1080 would be my preferred choice.

why are you selling the Brevis35? How much? condition?

I have too many adapters (I originally bought the M2, then the Brevis35, then the Letus Extreme; my DP also has the Leuts so that's the one I stayed with; obviously I like to spend money...). The Brevis would be my second choice because of the ease of setup and quality. The only downfall is the upside down image (now there is a flip module available). The Brevis is in excellent condition (I recently had Dennis at Cinevate put in a brand new imaging element) and includes the rod support bracket, power pod battery cable, charger and 72mm achromat and spacer. I know this isn't the right forum for this but I'm asking $750.00 with continental US shipping included (I paid over $1400.00 back when I bought it last fall, but the price has dropped since then so I'm trying to be fair).

I originally shot with the Brevis35 (footage can be seen at: http://www.drawingwithchalkthefilm.com/sc3.html

The rest of the clips on the site are with the Letus Extreme. If you have any other questions, just let me know.
