P2 card ate all my footage.... WHY???? :(

i would also like to chime in with the fact that on occasion off the factory line, there will always be that small chance of a defective item. you make X amount of units, there has bound to be a bad cookie. there is no piece of technology out there that has never had a faulty unit, and in the end it's all about who is the most unlucky. it happens, and it's probably premature of you to blame the entire system or even yourself for what went wrong. you could also try calling panasonic to see if you can send the card in and maybe they have special tools to retrieve your footage.

Just a quick question.. did you write protect the card after ejecting from the camera prior to downloading...???

I'm up to my 600th card downloads and have not lost a single clip...

Cheers

PS.. I even went into the drink along the Colorado River a few weeks ago... floated 1/2 mile downstream holding the camera in the air.. water got into the camera but 2 days of drying out and all was working again.... the footage on the cards were still usable and one 8 gig card that was in my pocket and totally soaked after 20mins in the water is fine...

Pretty robust system I reckon...

I don't think people are blaming you per se. To say that the system is flawed because you had a bad experience early on flies in the face of the success that all of us have repeatedly experienced. I have never lost a clip from 4 different cards in 2 years. And maybe you had a bad rental card, but flawed? I respectfully disagree.

i would echo the concern over flipping the write protect switch to on before putting it in a computer--i believe not doing that has lead to problems, specifically with macs.

As mentioned above, the ONE time we had corrupt data was when our PA didn't slide the protect tab before mounting through the Dual Adapter. This was on a PC.
We had done dozens of transfers this way, but it bit us that time. Now we always slide the protect tab before transferring.
I'm thinking that without the protects tab, the PC/MAC might write data upon connecting that can corrupt the P2 data. But I'm just guessing about this.
We've never had a bad file since. Knock on wood!:D

That's assuming the very busy rental house where I rented the P2 cards from hasn't deleted the card that was used 4 days ago.

To be honest, the camera isn't mine. I got it from a friend and they bought it for their productions. It was way to complex them (function wise) and they are always traveling and they need just quick little HD cams to basically point and shoot.

So they gave it to me. I already have a DVX100B and have always wanted a HVX but after using it just 3 times I can tell it's not for me. It's faster than digitizing, but stopping every 30 minutes to swap out cards, and set up transfers and then just trusting the transfer went ok and formatting the cards without checking thru all the footage scares the crap out of me.

After he gave it to me he said he wanted $4500 for it. So I figured I'd try it out and if I didn't want it, I'd just sell it for them.

So there you go. I tried it, I didn't like it, so I'm selling it. I got my eyes on a few other cameras that'll be renting and testing out before buying. Something with interchangeable lens is appealing to me, something that can record to tape AND to card is appealing to me. Especially after the loss of this footage. So... we'll see.

But there you have it.

$4500 and it's yours.

So, don't do that. Use P2CMS, which will do a bit-for-bit verification of the copy. Then you've got nothing to worry about.

If you don't like the way the system works, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with the way the system works, it's extraordinarily reliable, but some people don't like it so -- that's why we're glad that there's more manufacturers out there, plenty of choices for everyone.

I think a few people have been a bit hard on you RedShoe - considering you acknowledged it could be you that caused it. I feel for you that you lost some valuable data, I can only imagine the sweat steaming down your face thinkin oh ^$^%.

Im at a total loss to offer any advice here. But as Barry said if the shoe doesnt fit, well what can anyone say about that?

I've lost a full p2 card worth of date ones, on my 4gb, the transfers before and after worked fine, in fact that day I mafe about 10 transfers from that card, the one that was screwed was number 6, the only thing I did that wasn't the same as the other transfers what I had my laptop running on battery power rather than acdc power. I'm not sure if thats what caused it or if it was a flook but sometimes flloks happen,

another thing it may be, this happened to me ones as well, but I was able to fix it, when you dropped the files to your laptop, did you remember to grab the txt file. if you forget it, you may be in for a world of hurt.
