Seishin - Karate Movie

Jon Starr

Veteran
Seishin (Spirit)

Seishin is a film that my group and I made for our film 1 class.
We just finished editing today, and should
hopefully have something online soon.

Shot on 16mm film on a Bolex, we had only a week to
shoot, 3 rolls, and completed it in 10 hours.
It's a 2 minute piece. It is my first film shot on 16mm.
We divided up the roles (we alternated),
however I helped a lot with lighting.

It stars Steven Glickman, he is my Sensei.
It's a short visual piece, built as a training montage
(not meant to be cliché) and inspired by trailer style editing.

Created by Jonathan Starr, Brent Fidele,
Howie Pun and Yannic Wolfe.

Here are some screen shots.

Hey Man
Just Saw This Karate Movie Thread On User Films And Thought "Hey. Jon Starr Is Making A Karate Movie Thinger" Then I Just Clicked On It And Found Out That It's Your Little Short Film You Got On Here
The Screens Look Awsome
Can't Wait To See It!

lol thanks.

This one will be up really soon. It's already up on facebook, but we're having compression issues, and we're getting it fixed at school on Wednesday I believe.

Lighting in the grabs looks great, but it looks fairly grainy. What made you decide to shoot 16mm?

Thanks! I don't mind the grainy look. I love the look of film. So warm, and gritty. :) It might look a bit more grainy because it get's transfered to SD video. :(

As for why? Grades, lol. It's for my class and we had no choice of the medium to shoot on. :)

We're shooting our next film for the class, and it's all on digital.

Update:

Finally got it up. Hope you like it.

Mind you that when we compressed it, it seems to have taken a frame that we didn't have in the original cut. At 0:27 is a 'flash' of blue. It's not a big deal, but in case anyone is wondering, it's not intentional.

Hi

Hi

Hey This Film Is Great. The Visuals Are Good. The Way You Edited It Works With The Music Quite Perfectly. It's A Great Karate Montage! Clicked On Your Youtube Channel And I Actaully Gasped As Soon As I Noticed That There Was Something New On Your Channel Other Than The Moral Dilemma Teaser Trailer And I Was Like "Finally!". Haha. It's Great, Man. Keep On Bringing The Art! Props To You Guys On A Well Done Film!

Heh, thanks. You'll be seeing more of my stuff because of school now. We just finished shooting another video, and my sound guy tells me he's going to finish up a moral dilemma soon.

I missed this! I was sick for a while...

Great movie, Jon. The music is great, the shots are slick, and the editing is very good. I really don't have anything negative to point out on this one.

Very nice work!

Mike

Tell him if he doesn't I'm going to have to pay him a visit. I saw the rough cut and it's pretty sweet! Can't wait to see the polished version.

I expect an advanced copy via PM.

More Stuff By Jonathan Starr!!? :O Sweet. Can't Wait! Can't Wait For Moral Dilemma To Finally Be Up And Done Too! The First Time I Saw The Teaser Was Way Back Last Year. You're Stuff's Great Man!

Thanks guys.

I guess it's the artist that's always critical about his work, but I just look at it and I see a mess, lol. Shots that could have been better, editing that suffered due to lack of handles at the beginning and end of shots (we cut them out because of the cost of film, but regretted it later in editing), but I am overall happy with the final product.

I don't care about which one is a better medium, but when we worked with film it was like it had a certain... 'personality' or 'heart' that video lacks. The fact that we couldn't see the final product until a week later, the way we had to be absolutely certain about every little detail, f-stop, focus, rehearsing and getting it perfect before the shot, etc, it's just exciting (stressful too, but exciting at the same time). It feels like a certain type of tough love and training you don't get with the forgiveness of video. Then the warm grainy look of film... love it.

I can't wait to do more film work!
