Remote follow focus for £150/$300

I may have missed something, but are you just selling the part in the photos? ie: what does this part connect to? Do we require a specific follow focus unit to use with this? Or does this package come with all items required to remotely follow focus on an slr lens with gear? Do you have a video link demonstrating this in action?

No, the unit comes with a motor, but I havnt started working on that yet, which is why there is no photos of it. It connects to the motor with a 3.5mm jack cable which plugs into the silver plug on the bottom of the controller.

Been doing some thinking, and the minijack connection is a little bit un reliiable, can fall out etc. So i was thinking of changing it to a 3pin XLR cable, so you can use your standard microphone cables that you have lying about. You think this is a good idea?

That's an excellent idea. Now I won't have to carry a bunch of different cables around.

Ok, only problem now is that an XLR plug is so big behind the pannel the case will have to be 40mm longer... That ok too?

looks interesting, but a few questions come to mind:

1) Some lenses have a stiffer focus friction than others, so what is the torque that things little device can put out?
2) Would there be any type of warranty?
3) This obviously needs it's own follow focus ( gear and rail attachment ) What would it look like? And is it similar in shape/form as, let's say, the indifocus?

thanks.

The motor exerts about 10kg/cm of torque. The gear is about 5cm in diameter which means about 2kg of torque, which is enough for the stiff lenses. I will try it out on stiffer lenses first to be sure.

The motor unit will be similar to the one used by Foveas.

The warranty is simple, if it breaks, il fix it within a year of purchase.

Another quick photo update. Im not sure if the switch and light will stay like this, id like to put the XLR socket in the top panel, in which case the switch and light will move over to one side, but I think it looks quite nice.

I dont have anyones money yet.

Just been speaking to some machining companies about getting the cases properly cut out. All the components are on order, im sorting the electronics out as we speak and im about to ordeer the gears for the motor.

When its all ready im going to get proper photos done (proper product photos on a white curve etc etc) and you can have videos and datasheets etc etc.

So once this is in production for sale, will it include everything needed to mount it on the rails and start focusing right out of the box for the $300 price tag? (ex. I already have the RR rails, adapter and nikon lenses, will I need to purchase anything else to hook it up to my lenses? I'm assuming I'll probably need to buy my own lense gears, unless I've misread this post)

Looks like an awesome product by the way, I'm in need of a follow focus unit ASAP!

Yeah, this system uses standard XLR microhone cables to link the motor and the controller. The motor is on a 15mm mount, so you just need to slide it onto your rails, engage the motor and plug the controller in.

If you do not have any lens gears you will need a lens ring from somewhere. I use the SGpro ones. Make sure its 32pitch/0.8mod, but it almost certainly will be anyway.

Will it work the same with any lens gears? I was thinking of buying the RR ones due to their ease of use, but they also seem to be larger than most because of the way they attach to the lens... do you know if they will still hook up to your motor properly? Also, are you anywhere near a release date for this unit? I'm 99.5% in as long as it will work properly with my setup

The redrock rings are standard pitch so it will work fine.

Im just doing some financial working out at the moment, and the machining company are still calculating the cost after I sent them the drawings, but I would like to have them ready to go within a month.

People have suggested that I ask for a deposit which would certainly speed up my progress, I don't want to however. Not unless you want to ;-)

Thanks very much for your support, Im pretty sure what I have developed will help out a lot of people.

Pete.

I could but that would mean getting my own knob machined which would add about £100 to the price of the unit... Maybe RFF v2 could do this, but to keep it in this price bracket its not really an option....

Sounds good. So we DONT need to buy a 'regular' follow focus?
We just need the right pitch lens gear and the rest needed is in this $300US kit?
