Anyway to avoid this kind of footage?

Howdy...

Shot some footage today, and I noticed some artifacts in the subject's forehead. The image isn't hitting 100%, yet it looks like it's peaking.

Anyone know why this is happening and how I can avoid it?

Thanks...

remember an image can peak in the red channel before it hits the 100% luminance mark - especially skin tones. Watch your 70% zebras, maybe set them at 60% and see if it helps

Id need to see it on a waveform before making that call, but to fix a channel swap is probably the easiest way.

I pulled that into PSP and decreasing the brightness enough for that to really stick out, compression blocking artifacts started becoming noticeable.

OK. Here's an update...

Turns out there's nothing at all wrong with the footage (phew!). Turns out it's the crappy MacBook Pro Monitor, which isn't capable of displaying millions of colors (even though they say it is...).

When I look at the same footage on my Dell monitor (or even a cheaper viewsonic), it looks just fine, but on my MBP monitor, the footage looks posterized...

I showed the final project to the client today, and he LOVED it.

Good cautionary tale here, I think...

Best,

Ben

Glad you got it sorted - I have no idea what NLE you are using but to do channel swap in FCP - Effects > Video filters > Channel > Channnel swap
