What SLR lens to get for 35mm conversion

Hello.

I have recently, with bleeding heart, traded my HVX for Sony’s HDR-FX1 with full 35mm lens conversion kit and follow-focus.

The 35mm adaptor has an “SLR Nikon lens Mount”.

I don’t know the first thing about still-camera lenses.

Does anybody have any advice on which one (I hope one will suffice) to get?

I would look to get a budget-priced one. EBay completed listings has Nikon lenses ranging from $20-$1,000, so I’m lost as to what it is that I need.

Thank you very much

one lens? it doesnt really work that way. but like mark says, if you can only get ONE lens it should be a fast (low f-stop) zoom. otherwise, id go to a camera store that sells used gear. pick up maybe an old manual focus nikon/nikkor 24, 55, 85 and 110 and you'll be set. remember newer digital SLR lenses are NOT what you want. you want older manual focus lenses.

why did you do this in the first place?

Short answer: DoF.

Long answer: I now have a 1080i CCD camera with full 35mm conversion and follow-focus rig for what HVX *without* P2's is going for these days. Ideally, of course, I'd have an HVX with the same setup, but you're talking twice the investment (thank you , Panasonic, 82mm was a great idea;).

If our goal is to make things more film-like, my rig seems more suitable than an HVX with no attachments, as most indie filmmakers' destination is web and DVD.
If projected on a 30' screen, HVX would win out every time, but squeezed within an inch of its life on YouTube, or even projected off DVD at a film-fest, shallow field and racks will still show and gorgeous 1080p shan't...

One day, I hope to be back in the HVX fold...

Thank you for the input about lenses, I will peruse the 35mm forum stickies.
