Powering Panasonic with larger voltage battery belt

Hey there...

So I'm going to be buying the new panasonic monitor as well as a 200W HMI sun gun. However I'd like the battery belts that I buy to be switchable between the two.

I'll probably pick up a couple of these 30v/13.5v belts.

I know the monitor is powered by a 12v battery belt, would I fry it if I use it off of a 13.5v belt?

Lets play a game of good idea vs bad idea.

I power my BT-LH80WP with a '12V' battery belt... with a full charge the monitor's volt metre (great feature) tells me that the belt is putting out 13.2~13.7V it dips to around 11V before the power dies.

The manual says (you know that paper book that comes in the box) that the power supply can be DC 12V (11.0V to 17.0V) at 1.5amp. As far as I know the last bit -1.5amp- is the real important bit.

You could ask Dolgin, that guy knows everything about power.

If I'm not mistaken, as long as it provides 1.5a or more of current, it should work with the monitor. 1.5amps is what the monitor draws, so if the belt only provided 1.0 amps or something like that it wouldn't work, but having it supply more amperage shouldn't be a problem; the monitor just won't draw that additional use. It's like your household circuits -- those are 15-amp or 20-amp circuits, but you can plug in a lamp that uses only 60 watts (~0.05 amps).

I doubt that belt could power both the HMI and the monitor simultaneously though, seems like it's either 30V or 13V but not both outputs at the same time. Unless maybe you got some sort of 30V->12V converter...

Thanks Barry that answers my question perfectly...

I'd end up buying two or three belts, so I just want to be able to swap one of the spare belts to be able to power the monitor as well.

I may end up going with one of the cheapo ALZO "HMI" lights as well and save a bit of cash in the short term for this production.

Why the Alzo? Haven't heard much one way or the other about them, although Richard at Cool Lights doesn't seem to have the highest opinion of them.

Before you leap on that, consider the LED lights that we're talking about in another thread. Apparently Richard could get a 500-LED daylight-balanced light to us for around $200, and they can even be powered from DC. The Prompter People version is $449 and includes an AC power supply, which outputs 12V XLR DC -- which could be used to power your monitor instead, or the fluos could be powered from that battery belt, either way.

The LED light sounds interesting, do you have a link for that.

I was going to buy a used LTM 200W HMI sun gun used from hotlights for $600 bucks, but pile on a couple of 30v battery belts and I'm running $2500ish for the kit.

The ALZO is a **** ton cheaper, and at that price I wouldn't feel too bad if I destroy it with the wear and tear on the road.

FYI I'm going to be shooting a run and gun doc style film on the road, so size and space in the van will be a huge issue.

Google just found one of those 500W LED lights for me, but it looks like it may be a bit too large for my applications.

Probably not. It's about as bright as a 2-bank fluorescent, and I doubt that'd be enough to give you anything visible while the sun's still up, unless it's like 6" away from the subject or something.

Went to the CoolLights website and couldn't find any LED lights. Do you have a good link? The 500LED light for $200 sounds perfect.

He's not introducing them yet. We're talking about them in the FloLight review thread; Richard mentioned he's developing an LED panel that he could sell for as low as $200.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on his website. Speaking of inexpensive LED's...

Here's a link to a website where I found the so-called Microphone LED ($149) selling as a camping light for 12.95. I bought one and it's perfect. http://www.batteryjunction.com/ufoledcaliwi.html
