M2/HVX Music Video in Malibu

Thanks. We were surprised the cops hadn't shut us down by that point so we went over to the beach and shot it right before the sun went down.

Then right after that an LAPD helicopter flew overhead and we ran.

Redrock M2 for most of everything except some of the Jib shots at the beach and a few on the Venice boardwalk.

I used this rig. There's also a support rod that attaches to the waist that isn't pictured.

cool rig. which one is that? i have shot so much around venice and santa monica and have never had a cop look twice. we got kicked off the beach once by the beach patrol but they just advised us to stay off the sand and suggested the boardwalk. it was awesome. i was shooting car to car on ocean blvd. and there was a second cam mounted to the hood of the car i was shooting. we had a cop pull up next to us. he checked it out and went on his way.

i'm starting to think that people that talk about how strict cops in la are are trippin'

anyway, nice video.

It's the DV Rig Pro HD - Bought it at EVS. It worked great although after 6 hours it starts to wear you out.

LAPD really did fly right over the top of us. The beach patrol drove by twice too. I had a DV Tape in the camera ready to hand over to anyone that was confiscating footage. But It was just me, the DP, and the two actors... so we didn't look like we were doing anything spectacular.

I haven't had any problems in the past either.

They get strict when there's 10 people standing around holding boom mics and manning c-stands and all that other stuff that happens. That's when you're gonna get busted. But if you're just shooting natural light with lav mics and a couple actors it's easy to stay low key. It's easy to say, "Oh we're just testing the camera."

That's my experience.

so you have gotten busted with a large crew before?

my first big guerilla experience was a night shoot in front of a bar on melrose. we had 8 crew, lights, dolly, jib, and 30+ actors on the sidewalk all night. every time i saw a cop coming i freaked out a little. but after 6 or 7 times i saw they weren't really concerned with what we were doing. nobody ever stopped.

damn. That is pretty funny. That's kind of a big FU to the whole concept of permits. I love that.

I have never been busted, but I've heard stories. Burbank is especially difficult from what some of my friends have told me.

In Glendale you just need permission from the Armenians and you're golden. That's a joke. And I love Armenians.

I like the aspect ration of the QT. I know about matting the image to the aspect ratio you want. But how did you get the size the the QT to be 2:35??
And the hole thing looks good.

Use compresor right out of the timeline.

There's an option to crop the image to your desired aspect ratio. Although I think that is what's causing that thin green line on the right hand side.

If I just export through compressor as a standard 16:9 image then that green line disappears.

So that blows.

Omg. What a great idea. I was shooting some footage on Friday in the subway system here (didn't know I needed a permit), and one of the authorities shut me down. I didn't know what I was going to do if they threatened to confiscate. Now I have an answer! I keep a mini DV in the tape drive at all times. Woohoo!

I love those beach shots. That last shot with the girl leaning on his shoulder at sunset, did you have any fill light on their faces? What was it?

Steven

We had a gold-shiney-circular-bendy thing. One of those things that zips into a smaller circle. I don't know if we were using it on that shot, but probably. Most of those two days are a blur.

Glad you liked the shots MisterCat.

Nexis, did you get shut down in Toronto?

All joking aside it was a 5 in 1 multi disc. Using the gold side.
I don't like to use technical terms for things. I even refer to my HVX as "The thing that records HD stuff"
