As the title says, Can the DVX100b do time lapse / slo mo / ramping/ ?

also, (i think) it only has 24p not 24pA - what's the best method / settings of capturing and editing 24p with FCP? ("film look" is the goal as always!)

Thanks!

100b Does have 24pA.

No, it cannot do interval recording for timelaps, but you can always tape an hour of something and speed it up in post. Slow motion can be archived by shooting 60i and dropping it in a 24p timeline slowing your footage to 40% its original speed (search for more info).

It cannot ramp, but you can do that to some degree in post. It just won't look that great.

thanks for the reply and for clearing that up!

If the 100b has 24pA, is that generally considered superior to 24p, if so, why? - is it easier in terms of capturing/workflow or does it somehow just produce a smoother or more film like image somehow? I've read a fair amount on 24p but some of it is meaningless numbers for instance I understand 24p uses the 2:3 cadence and 24pA uses 2:3:3:2 - just not sure of the benefits..... I've read somewhere that if you want to shoot 24p and you've got the choice of 24p or 24pA, you shoot 24pA...true?

Depends on how you want to deliver. If it is for Web, Film out, or 24p DVD then I would shoot and edit in 24pA.

If it is to go alongside 60i material, or is for TV broadcast I would think about shooting 24p and editing in a 29.98 timeline.

I personally always shoot in 24pA because my stuff goes to web and DVD but there isn't any real "image quality" difference between the two.

Even if it's for broadcast, if it's all 24p, then shoot 24pA and edit in 24p. You will have no problems exporting a 29.97 version for broadcast, and you will keep your footage and any added effects -- transitions, text, motion graphics -- at the same timebase as your footage.

The only time you'd want to edit as 60i is if you're mixing with 30p or other timebase footage that you don't want to convert to 24p.

thanks for the replies.

what the heck is timebase? - does that just mean in sync? timecode?

thanks

wicked thanks!

man, It's a real bummer that the HVX is like £800 'cause it's 16:9 native, helluva lot of different shooting options / selectable formats, loads more lovely pixels and selectable frame rates for nice sped up / slow mo shots....

I don't want to be an idiot and get drawn in by loads of features I'm not gonna use like For example, I'll probably not shoot in HD until I get to a point where I'm getting enough income or my clientele starts demanding it.

Is it worth the extra £800 to a newbie? is the DVX100B good enough at 16:9 etc? I think it's a dang shame about the slo mo although that suggestion could work out, right? will the 60i workaround look good? (man, what a rubbish question)

thanks
