"HVX only records 1080i, no 24p, and it looks like horseshit" -Give me a 1080p file

Like the old joke goes, What's the difference between God and a DP, well God doesn't think he's a DP.

I do hate that kind of mentaility and your DP is so mistaken. I have and will shoot 1080/24 when I shoot greenscreen or want to get a cleaner image overall. All of the shorts and the sketches I've done is in 1080. One thing on this site than convinced me to shoot 1080 was that series of clips from the printing press that was shot in 1080 and it just looks so clean.

Tell your DP to jam it and he should have to eat a pile of that crap he's been serving up. I personally would shoot something in 1080 and show it to them and then see how his face cringes.

I had a similar situation when I was actually a DP in school and trying to explain my point of view on something regarding the camera and compensating for filters or such and the whole crew was against me. So we went ahead and did it as a consensus even though I held true and resisted and when I was proved right you didn't hear a peep out of them, but man did I let them have it and it felt good to be vindicated.

Good luck and stick up for yourselve and if they are doing a filmout, it should be done on the 1080 24pa, Barry gave me valuable advice on that way back and he's totally right... IT's cleaner than 720 and I'd take the DP aside privately and tell HIM OFF..

I think I understand what he is talking about. because it happend at my school too. The school just bought a HVX a few months ago and no one knows how to use it.... so they did some test shoot and when ever there was fast motion on the 1080i footage, the motion was blure. the 720p footage was fine so everyone just shoot on 720p settings.

btw, it's not a film school or anything so I guess it happens..

you did the right thing.
what you do next is up to you, but you can sleep at night knowing that you are RIGHT

Mind sharing the technical issue? That would be cool, thanks.

Sure thing as far as I can remember we were shooting with daylight balanced film indoors and we had to use an 85b filter and I was talking about the light compensation and having to give it more of an exposure. I forget the exact amount and everyone was arguing that what the light meter was reading was what we should set the F-stop at. So later on everyone called me saying hey... you know we should have shot it more wide open to compensate and I was like yes.. I know. The funny thing is that I knew I was right so I did actually compensate as I was the one on the camera. It was a case of everyone following the director's "VISION"... instead of letting me light and deal with the camera, which I had more experience with.

Man, that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away when I was in love with an Aaton 16mm camera... which now has been replaced with my love of HD. I would gladly shoot film again, if someone else was paying for it.

Does this make sense Jack? I do also think that the way to deal with this DP is to take him aside and talk to him without the group. As a wise old producer/Mentor once told me:

"Praise in public, but scold in private". I've tried to follow that on my crews and it's much more appreciated when it's done as such... CHEERS ALL>

I've worked with more than one established, name DP who had very little technical knowledge of the cameras he operated.

From a framing and lighting perspective, you had an A-player, but they relied heavily on assistants and people like the DIT to keep the camera at the proper "setting" and so forth. Timecode, as an example, has absolutely confounded more than one I've had the pleasure to work under.

This is likely one of those things.

Recently had a major reality shoot DP decide to shoot all his HDV cameras (9, thankyouverymuch) in CineFrame instead of standard 1080/60i. Despite several operators arguing that it would compromise the image significantly, he shot Cineframe on nine cameras for three days before the post-production coordinator called and had an "offline" conversation about why the **** was he ruining the series in CineFrame?

I would secret the [HVX] camera away at some point and shoot a 720p versus 1080p test and play it back on the best on-set monitor you've got. Pan across a few shots, go static with others - no charts or anything fancy - just a few well-lit, well-composed comparison shots. Show the DP when you two are completely alone. Tell him that you needed to figure it out, because Barry Green told you that it was absolutely 1080p.

He'll likely thank you for it (or fire you) and you'll be the kind of assistant DPs come to rely on - the kind that always has the DP's back.

ok well now that we're totally off topic, here are some good on set jokes i've picked up.

how many first-time directors does it take to change a light bulb?

i don't know, what do you think?

how many producers does it take to change a light bulb?

does it have to be a light bulb?

how many actors does it take to change a light bulb?

just one. he holds the bulb while the world revolves around him.

what do grips use for birth control?

their personality.

how many 1st ac's does it take to change a light bulb?

never mind, it's already done.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure i have done it before but can someone just confirm the process to get true progressive 1080 out of a PAL HVX, I use FCP, just got myself confused thinking about formats and frame rates etc and havent got my camera with me to check,

thanks

BTW i think this situation happens to everyone at some point in this industry, you are better for stating your point and i'm sure in time the horsesh*t DP will learn of the HVX's capabilities and remember your argument,

All the best

Q- Why are a Grip's eyes red after sex?

A- Mace.

Bill... That's a good one.

Why do people in Hollywood "air kiss", Well, because they know where their lips have been.

Why do people in hollywood hug so much, Well, it's easier to stick the knife in from so close.

I think a lot of people fall into the trap of easily grabbing on to little tidbits they hear, especially on line, but with having no practical experience...if someone hears "never shoot 1080 with the hvx" or the like it has the sound of insider knowledge...and it spreads like wildfire...(like we'll all be forced to buy HDTVs next year or barak obama is a muslim etc.) I've had so many discussions with people who own the camera who don't know half the capabilities...they google something before they would actually take the camera out of the bag and find out for themselves.

In the interest of full disclosure I probably know half of what the camera does...of course hanging out at dvxuser, reading Barry's HVX200 book and experimenting with the camera, maybe I know a bit more...

On a side note:

What is the difference between a grip and a gaffer?

A gaffer takes the dishes out of the sink before he pees in it.

RJS

Nice one RJS.. You are so true about people owning the camera and not knowing the capabilities. One guy I was working with didn't know it shot slow-mo or timelapse. He was shooting to P2 and then dumping to tape in the camera....

Don't have any more film jokes but a few musician ones are good.

what does a stripper do with her ahole before work? Drop him off at band practice.

What does a keyboardist like more than roses on his keys? Two lips on his organ...

and,

what do you call a lead singer without a gf? Homeless.

ok i got musician jokes....

how can you tell if there's a drummer at your door?

the knock speeds up.

what's the difference between a drummer and a large pizza?

a large pizza can feed a family of four.

did you hear about the drummer that locked his keys in the car?

they had to break the window to get the bass player out.

there's a dead tuba player and a dead snake on the side of the road. what's the difference?

the snake was on his way to a gig.

what do you call a guy that hangs out with musicians?

drummer.

how can you tell if there's a singer at the door?

the doorbell is off key.

Jack - off subject for a moment - well maybe not too off since we are talking about the 1080 - When is there going to be a LA Boot Camp or better yet Seattle Boot Camp?
