THE TRAGEDY OF MISTER GEPPETTO - A film by J. Anthony Gonzales

A quick update on my first feature length project...

I am working my ass off to meet the March 15th submission deadline for CineVegas 2008. I don't anticipate much sleep over the next 48 hours. Anyway, picture is almost locked and I have a some VFX to complete. I also plan on spending the day tomorrow building a rough sound mix. I will eventually get this thing into a studio for a pro mix at a later date (and hopefully a bump up to HDCAM for a certain festival in the desert).

Fellow DVXUser member Tom Marshall has really been a trooper pulling acting duties and crew work. He's been my right-hand man on this picture since day one.

DVXUser member Max Wilson (webdog) also put in a couple of days... and lots of gear!

Anyway, I'll get some more stuff up on this project soon. Gotta get back to work!

Cheers!

Thanks for the update, John. Glad you guys are on the home stretch. Good luck with the 48 hour post-production marathon. Can't wait to see a trailer.

Here's to making the festials.

Crawling out of my hole and getting some air. What? It's daylight out? What? It's 2:00 in the afternoon?

Thanks, mentatDUKE, for the support. Cheers!

Ok, back into the womb with me.

Welp, I didn't make the CineVegas deadline. Who knew posting a feature would take so much ****ing work?

BUT... CineVegas has graciously offered to extend the deadline for me until the end of this week, so all is not lost.

Basically, I'll be sending them a "work-in-progress". The good thing is that the picture is 99.9999999% locked. There are a few sound and VFX elements that are not complete, but I tried to submit a version where the film still feels whole.

I'm back at my day job now, so that leaves little time for film work during the weekdays. My wife is a real trooper through all this. My kids are tired of watching scenes for opinions. :)

Anyway, more to come once I get through this week.

Cheers!

Can't wait to see what you've got!
Is this in the same style as Pathomania?

Mr. Poindexter! Great to hear from you. I swear to God, I don't know how many times I wished you were still around these parts. And I must have muttered your name a thousand times on this project. Wish you could have been part of it, my friend. You would have had a blast.

To answer your question, no, this is a regular ol' film, well, maybe regular isn't the right word... let's just say that it is a live action film instead of animation or other thing.

Hope all is well with you out there on the island. Keep in touch!

Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words. I definitely wish I would have been around for this.

As always, I can't wait to see what you've got.

Hey John! I don't visit this forum too often.... sorry I missed your thread.

How is it going? Did you get your film done?

I was feeling your anxiety just reading this!

Let us know!!!

I am rooting for you!

Ted, my man. Thanks for the support!

Still working on it. I've got to get the preview copy to FedEx by tomorrow so that it will get to them on Monday. A new issue arose that affected the sound mix, so I've been reworking it. Sound is the largest incomplete element of the film right now. Picture is pretty much locked and rendered (although not final as there are still some VFX work to do), so it's easy to work on sound now. My "ancient" computer took 12-1/2 hours to render the DVDA mp2 file. I've done it twice and that's more than enough for right now.

So looking to put in one more all-nighter to get what's there of the sound into shape and then send that puppy off to sin city.

Once I get my shi* together, I'll start posting some REAL stuff, like grabs, prod. notes and such.

My next big chore is to find some small shop/person to do a sound mix. I was quoted $30K for a "basic Sundance mix" from one of the major post-shops in L.A.. My budget for a pro sound mix is about 1/20th of that. God forbid I should have to mix this myself.

Cheers!

The film was shipped off to CineVegas and they should receive it today. Now comes the waiting game.

I watched the work-in-progress all the way through with some relatives/friends last night. While I didn't get an over-exuberant standing ovation, nobody left the room until it was over and nobody fell asleep. Also, they were only planning to watch the first 10 or 15 minutes, but they all stayed until the end. Now, either that's just extreme politeness or the film actually held their interest.

So now comes the work of finishing this puppy. Tons of sound work to do and a small amount of VFX.

And away we go...

john, i know we've been chatting over on the WAB boards, just wanted to say best of luck... to both of us. would be great to have a dvxuser contingent at CineVegas this year.

Just thought I'd post a quick update... well, nothing much to update other than that I'm working my ass off to finish. I actually had stepped away from it for a couple of weeks and getting back to it I'm seeing some things about the film in different ways... some good, some bad, but it really does help creatively to take a breather once in a while.

More to come soon, I promise.
