Suggestions on how to achieve audio effect

I'm trying to process a video to give it the "Old timey" feel, and need help on doing the audio. I thought raising the treble and the bass would be enough, but it still doesn't sound tinny enough. What would you suggest?

You should actually go in the opposite direction. You want to put a high pass and a low pass filter on it to get rid of the high and low end. You also might want to try putting in some "dirt" into the signal.

Izotope makes a free plug-in called Vinyl that might do the trick for you. I haven't played around with it much, but you can't beat the price.

Good luck.

Free is always good! I tried to find something to give it those his and pops, but my searches came back with a gajillion hiss and pop removal tools, but nothing to put them in. And thanks for the high and low pass filters, I'll give them a shot.

I forgot to mention this, but it might also help to put a slight peak around the area where you have the low pass set. This is called resonance in a lot of EQs.

And I forgot to mention that I am at the dabbling stage with audio, and you lost me at "add peaks"... :) My regular machine is down, and I am stuck with the old box and Premiere 6. I also have an ancient version of Sound Forge, and will likely use that to set the filters. I can find that and other simple things to experiment with, but really don't get the whole picture yet. It's mostly trial and lots of error for me.

the new plug in I bought can do this in a snap, it's called "speakerphone".

you can do it without it, but this plug in makes it so easy!!

I'm pretty sure there are tutorials and maybe free plug ins, if I only knew the magic keyphrase. Like I said, there is a gajilion different things for taking hiss and pop out, but try finding the one that puts it in. It's like a needle in a haystack.

Go get an old dirty record and record the pops. Use a tone generator to create some white noise. Layer everything together. It should not be very difficult.

How much do you want to spend?
Speakerphone is Very cool, but I think it's only Mac, could be wrong, and it's $500.
Vinyl will do what you want nicely and it's free and I'm pretty sure there is a VST PC version. Also recording is good, but maybe not practical. Also most of those pop removal tools have an audition noise switch. click that and process and you get nothing BUT the noise.
Roger Nichols bought and is now selling some great plugins from Elemental Audio. One of the EQ's has presets for phone etc that will get you right to that thin tinny sound your looking for.
White noise isn't that useful unless you really work it. Old analog noise isn't that steady in volume or spectrum so it's hard to make White noise work unless you automate level changes and automate some eq moves over that.
Vinyl is my go to for this kind of thing and as soon as my plug in budget gets refilled Speakerphone is next on my list.

I downloaded Vinyl, but since I don't have Pro Tools, or anything like it, I'm thinking I'm out of luck- unless the plug in works with Premiere 6. My PP2 machine dies every time I try to render anything. I do have Sound Forge 4 or so, somewhere. That is what I planned to tweak it with.

And I don't want to spend anything, any money I get is going into my edit machine! I'm flat out going nuts here!

I'm pretty sure that Vinyl is also VST and Au along with RTAS, so I would imagine it can be used with Premiere. Speakerphone is great, but expensive as Noiz said. The Roger Nichols plug-in he was referring to is called Uniquelizer and it is great. Another free plug-in is JK-Phone from JK Audio. It might be hard to find, but I think it's still out there. It has high and low pass as well as a saturation slider.

Alas, JK-Phone is RTAS. To anyone else interested, here is the link.

In that case I would call on your greatest asset, favors. Find someone who does sound and have them tweek it for you, then buy them a beer, assuming a beer falls under the spend no money level.

Well, I really was looking for suggestions so that I could do it myself. I don't "need" this for a client, but just because I thought it would fit the music. Think O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and you'll get the idea. Particularly the opening with the phonograph scratches.

Here is the video as I left it- www.guitargarage.tv , and click on the garage door.

"Vinyl" definitely works with Soundforge as VST and Direct X plugins, as well as PRo Tools - I don't know if 'forge 4 supports VST but you can always DL the 30 day trial version of the current release of 'forge and use it for this one project.

I haven't used them in SF before, mostly because I don't know much about them. But, I will play around a bit, and try it.

Thanks all, for your suggestions and advice.

Also check out iZotrope's Ozone plugin - it has an "old telephone" preset that sounds like just what you're looking for. Again, a demo version is available for free download
