"schism" feature length film (DVX100a)

Chuck Palahniuk likes schism!

Chuck Palahniuk likes schism!

We got the first feedback from our recent Sundance excursion this past week! Actually its really our first real feedback from the film at all. No one has seen it outside of Dorota (DP/co-editor), Andy (score), and I. Well except for some film festivals who saw early cuts...(well, hopefully they watched it).

It happens to be from author Chuck Palahniuk (the man behind "Fight Club", "Choke", etc)!! We gave him the 1/15/8 cut of the movie and he really seems to be impressed by the film. He even said he'd help us out and send some blurbs to use in promo! Obviously we're very excited. I'll share his thoughts here once I get them...

This weekend we are starting on color correction. First we're going to go through and just make sure all the shots match in each scene. Then tweak the black levels and color from there...

We are now done with sound.

clips?

clips?

OK, so we finished "schism" completely this weekend and I'm ready to share some exclusive clips. Is anyone still interested?

speechless? lol

I'm considering posting a more dialogue heavy scene tonight. But that's all you're gonna get until I cut a trailer! If you guys are up for it, let me know. Where's Brandon when I need to kick some life back into this thread!?

We were invited to play at a college in Pennsylvania. So we're going to do two test screenings in April. 811 seat venue. I'm pretty jazzed (and nervous as hell!) If any of you live in PA, OH, NY and may want to attend, let me know, it's open to public and students.

I'm here dude, and I DL'd the scenes, jut haven't watched them yet... been extremely busy shooting... will watch and comment soon.

Cool clips man.

I like the creepy atmosphere of the 1st scene. Good execution, but I was curious, what is 'she' doing in the shot b4 the one were she turns off the light? When it was still his CU but we see her tinkering on the left? Eh, it's probably that I gotta see the whole thing.

The 2nd scene was quite heartwarming. Made me wish I was with my grandparents. Good choices of craning! :-)

GDV,
She is a nursing aid in the facility. He was staring off and she was standing there, perhaps she had just come in. When she's tinkering she's just getting his bed ready. Yeah, obviously at this point in the movie you'll know those routines, but I understand how that could be not so obvious just seeing this clip. Thanks for watching though man, I appreciate it! Did you get a chance to watch the "dance" clip?

Charlie,
If the weather's nice, could be a fun drive! If you do decide to drive the 4 hours let me know, I'd obviously comp your tickets.

Hi John,

I have watched the clips and I have known about your development of this film for some time. I am impressed and I do think your project looks promising. For me, the most striking thing about this is not really the movie itself but what development you have made technically since Hunting Camp. I can take out the fact you clearly have more camera equipment this time around, or maybe you don't, however it is a marked improvement.

The shots are composed well, the lighting is unintrusive if just a touch dark in areas, and the acting clearly has more measured direction so that nothing jumps out as totally incongruous. There are only two clips so it is hard to say much more, but you have greatly improved and you should take that as a major achievement. This looks professional, feels professional and if the entire movie holds up to these clips then you have a real feature worthy of attention in itself or in the form of more work.

Thanks so much man for the nice words! Sadly, I still just operate a single, un modified DVX100A. But this time around I had an actual (albeit tiny) crew of great talent with me that made the pictures very pretty.

I think the compression for web made the first two clips a bit darker than they are. I may go back sometime and lighten just a tad for these web exports. For the "strangers" clip though that was just how I wanted it. basically just the actors lit (and the back wall by the window of course) the rest to go completely into blackness, for reasons you'll see (some day) in the full feature.

More work sounds good! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Hey John,

Thanks for posting those clips! Clip one didn't grab me as much, for a few reasons:
  1. Pacing - seemed like it could have moved a long a little quicker.
  2. When he mentioned someone's in the chair, there's no chair that I can see in the shot, so I'm confused.
  3. When we show the chair, then a bit of another angle, while I don't feel so much that a line was crossed, it did feel 'off' to me.
  4. The lines delivered felt a tad cold, or stilted ... some compelling score, however, could really bring the piece together more, as it would fill in any voids, and continue to help drive home that he's lonely, imagining things, etc.
  5. The smash cut to him in bed threw me.
  6. Didn't get the nurse disappearing with the lamp click- was she also an illusion?
2nd clip: LOVED this one! Excellent production value, framing, lighting, editing, etc. Very nicely done. I also loved how we saw what they were feeling in their hearts & minds. Great job! :)
