Cinematography Demo Reel

I love the shots of the P-51. It's my favorite airplane of all time. The sequence with the Me-109 is awesome.

Nexis, thanks for taking a look. I am a huge fan of the P-51. The shots later on in the demo reel with the ME109 are from some CG sequences that I have been working on for a short film of mine.

The plane sequences are neat, but I'd leave CGI off a cinematography reel. Its purpose is to show off your work as a DP- not VFX.

A lot of your work is soft, and I mean a lot of it. The airplane footage really throws me off as it's really shakey and hand held and for a reel that's supposed to display your skills with a camera it's really distracting, even if it was motivated for the flying shots it's just drawn out way too long.

The light reflecting off of the actors faces are really distracting.

I think the best looking stuff was the close-up shots of the drugs and money.

The best camerawork was the dirtbike stuff, you were really able to keep with it, something not easy to do.

the airplne stuff is slightly out of focus (you can tell by looking at the subject and edges surrounding it) with a subject.

Look at the B&W stuff, it starts out with nice focus but then as it gets closer, with the POV shot and the reverse shots it's out of focus in a lot of the areas (it does go back but still it's noticable). The next scene with the guy talking to the girl is really soft, probably because the backfocus of the adapter wasn't set properly.

It's most likely a compression issue but that's what I see. Not bashing at all, just my constructive criticism.

It's good. You have done a lot of quality work. I know that you are trying to show off your DP work and you need time for people to view the shots, but I think that I would shorten the video (total run time) and have the shots move faster (edited tighter). I think it should build (start off slower at first, then pick up speed). Also, was the plane footage at the top from the same project as the stuff at the end? Is so, I would not repeat it. It kind of makes it look like you are repeating your work because of lack of experience (I might be wrong). Just ideas. Also, can you make the music sting at the end. Right now it just slowly fades. A big sting would be a better ending.

TheFilmAddict, thanks for the feedback. I am definitley looking at changing the pacing a bit. Also, the shots of the airplanes at the end is from a different project, but it is with the p51 as well, so I can see how it might seem repetative.
Thanks

Charlie Anderson, the compression does do a number on my shots, but your right about the footage with the guy drinking the pepsi, my depth of field was so shallow that he kept moving out of focus and I kept pulling focus to correct.
Also, the B&W POV stuff is supposed to be coming in and out of focus, because it is supposed to be from the POV of the woman who is taking pictures of him with her long lens. So logically she would have to adjust focus as she shoots. I guess without seeing more of that scene, it could be taken out of context.
Thanks again

I agree with tightening up the reel. I also tend to pick music that has a little more variation in tempo which matches the different tones of the reel. BTW, "Canon" only has one "n". You have a typo on your website.
