External HDD direct to HVX200? Possible?

Hi,

Has anyone come across a DIY solution to using an external drive to directly put captured footage from the HVX200 to a drive.

I am going to be using my HVX200 for lots of test footage and it isn't too important if it gets lost or not recorded (which I feel is the main benefit of a firestore / p2) so I don't see how it makes much sense to buy an $800 P2 card or a $1,700 essentially 160gig external HDD when I can get a TB internal for less than $250.

Thanks for any links / help,

edit: another thought is can you transfer directly to a laptop in the field. obviously this hurts mobility a bit but is this a solution?

The only hard drive you can record directly to is the FireStore. Nothing else will work.*

You can use cheap external hard drives with the HVX, but you have to record the footage to a P2 card. Then you can use the HVX to copy the footage directly from that P2 card onto a hard disk.

You can use Adobe OnLocation and some other programs to do live capture from a laptop onto an external hard disk (or even the laptop's internal hard disk) without using any P2 cards. That is obviously the cheapest option, but you do limit your mobility by tethering yourself to a laptop. So it depends on what your freedom is worth; for most of us it's worth the price of entry of the P2 cards, but for some the laptop can be the method of choice.

*and yes, I'm intentionally ignoring the CitiDisk as I've never heard a report from a DVXUser saying that it is a reliable, functional solution.
