Hunter, Im gonna go look now. Just saw the grabs though and have to say to the HPXs credit - the contrast range in this grab is simply not possible in many cams.

Is there anyway to see a more uncompressed file? I am doing some research trying to figure out if the HPX500 is feature ready (at least for what I am looking for (naturalistic lighting/ low light setups).

Much appreciated!

Well, its not that much less compressed..but it is HD

In all honesty, if you feel the varicam is "feature ready", the hpx500 is "feature ready" too. The visual difference is pretty small compared to the price.

This video looks pretty natural. Did you use a lighting setup?

Also, how do you feel the DOF is on the camera (is it do-able)?

I am looking to rent one with the stock Fujinon lens. It's going to run me about 5k for 2-2 1/2 weeks. I am looking at doing a lot of handheld shots (in a Gondry(ish) sort of way).

We were working so fast on unfamiliar sets, that I didn't have time to do as much with the lighting as I wanted. I used a few 650's bounced off of ceilings with ctb gels other than that it was all lit with daylight & practicals.

Im not sure what your asking about the DOF? Do-able as in shallow? or Do-able as in workable by yourself?

I had a focus puller and I only pulled focus myself a few times. If your open on that fuji lens @ 20mm f1.8 its like shooting with a 50mm at f4.5 in s35mm.

And if you were using a 24mm digiprime at t1.5 (approximately f1.4ish) you would get the same result as a 60mm @ f3.8 in s35mm.

You can get great results, it just requires a little more thought to get the 35mm DOF "film-look".

Does that answer your question?

I thought the film looked great! This was a really well told short. You guys created a pretty moving piece in only 5 or 6 minutes. Amazing story telling!

Hunter,

have you posted details on your low contrast scene file on-line? I'd like to take a look at the settings and your thought process.....and ok, well it kicks ass, so i'd like to steal it and maybe tweak it a bit :-)
