Popsicle - A Super 8 Short Film - Official Production Journal Thread

Ha.

Wonderful!

If only my 16mm short films in college looked this good. I thought I even detected a few split-second hairs in the gate. Great memories. Sniff! Sniff! I miss working with film.

Seriously, though. Your firm totally has a totally chic, French New Wave vibe to it. The shot selection and composition had a poetic, uncluttered economy to them. The voice over, which are usually cloying with most films (student are not) is spot-on and well-done here. Much talent. I never would have imagined 8mm looking so good or being perfectly adapted to a particular piece.

All you're missing is a foreign-speaking voice-over to add artistic authenticity. And be honest now--the only reason why you posted this was to make DV users jealous of your ultra-grain. :)

Thanks shutterspeed,

I'm happy to hear you liked my film.

And might I say, those were some mightly fine comments you made. Would you believe that I have considered finding a girl who speaks french as an alt. voice to use.

Haha, you know the thought of making DV users jealous never really crossed my mine until you said it. It was just by chance that the project I was working on currently was going to be shot on Super-8. I've been considering making a film for Lovefest so i'll blend in with my fellow DV shooters then. I will most likely be using a DVX100b with the M2.

Dude,

Did you used max8 (widescreen mod for 8mm) or did you just letterboxed the screen afterwards? Thanks.

Btw - The flying scene in combination with the soundtrack is really impressive.

Hey huck,

No, sadly I wish I had the money to mod my Beaulieu for wide screen (it's on the to-do list along with getting a new battery for it). So instead, yes it's just a 4x3 from the Canon that I cropped in Final Cut Pro, for purely a aesthetic reason. I framed all the shots knowing that I will be doing the crop.

I'm glad you like the flying scene. I can't take all the credit for that Herman really created a wonderful soundtrack to compliment the images.

Very nice! Congrats on the interview that's great! I really enjoyed watching it, reminded me of a David Lynch short, I think just because it was the grainy contrasted look of the 8mm. Anyway, well done!

Haven't visited this thread in a while...

Thanks MechSpike! I'm glad you liked it.

Some news....

As of yet I have yet to land this little film in any film festivals. But I did manage to get another magazine interview! Look for an article on Popsicle in next month's issue of Super 8 Today Magazine.

Also, if your going to be in the Santa Ana area in the next few weeks take a visit on over to Samy's Camera. They have agreed to run Popsicle on the HD TV's when you enter the store.

That's all for now!
