HMC70 New HD Camera under 2 grand

It's 1080/60i only. The colorimetry is tuned to match the rest of the Panasonic lineup but there's no progressive mode at all so -- as to how well it'll match 720p footage, I dunno...
 
And AVCHD is a PITA to deal with. My friend brought me back a lot of footage he shot undercover in China. What a horrible format to post with. Looks fine but the hoops you have to jump through to edit with it are a nightmare.

For an FCP user all you have to do is the same log & transfer (transcoding to AIC or ProRes) process that you already use for P2, n'est-ce pas?
 
Awful. Who would buy this thing? First of all...no one is going to spend $2,000 on a camera that looks like it was found inside of a time capsule from 1987.

What is this camera trying to offer....?

High -definition video that's compatible with 720/1080? HA!

For the same price (and half the size and weight) I could easily invest in one of the many other consumer/prosumer HD cameras that offer 720 and 1080 in 24/30 and 60.

This is what happens when you take "affordable HD video" too far.

Whatever Panasonic is going with this camera...they need to drop it. It's big, its ugly, it doesn't even shoot anything TRULY compatible with DVCPROHD footage.



I could stop here..but I wont, becuase I want to address an issue. How often do we see a company release a camera that is "Affordable HD Video" but lacks the BIG quality aspects of HD video?

How can anyone honestly...and I do mean honestly...market a camera towards "INDIE HD fans" When their product does NOT SHOOT

This camera was strictly made as an answer to the comparable Sony model that just came out. It was also made for people who really don't know what they are doing in regards to video...teachers, cops, etc.

Clearly and obviously this is not marketed at indie film folks, and sometimes it seems like our users here don't recognize that the indie film segment is a *tiny* segment of the market. Cameras like this are aimed at schools and wedding shooters.
 
Why use this 'undercover' in China? I've shot there a few times in the last year, without any troubles at all. The last time with the HVX, tripod, shotgun mic with a wind-break... even had some police help me hold back a crowd so I could get a shot.

Mind you I was s*****g my pants waiting for the axe to fall; but I am just dumb enough to do it again.

I have just bought 3 hvx 200's for filming lectures , seminars and events.

They usually last about one and a half hours or longer. So this new camera would be good for long HD record times.

Panasonic do have a AVCHD to DVCPROHD free converter program on their download page, not shore how fast it is to convert....
