B&W film noir short with DVX100

Hey guys,

I'm soon gonna shoot a film noir style short with the DVX100. It's gonna be in Black & White (done in post), in 24p and I really wanna nail it with lighting!
Any tips on how to get the best out of the camera (best settings) and lighting (type of lights, their position, shadows etc.)??

Thank you in advance.

PS: I usually shoot on an HVX200, so I'm new to the DVX100...

Last month, for a short film challenge, I took a stab at a B&W 'film noir'. However, I didn't set out to make it B&W. I was going for a kind of color 'film noir' type of look (think LA Confidential), but it was in post that I thought our lighting gave enough contrast to pull off a decent B&W. Shot w/ DVX-100b.

You can crank up the blacks a bit 6-10 for great contrasts. But al in al it's really up to the mood you whana achieve...
In post you can always bring up the whites and highend the contrast for a dirty look.

D_ODELL:

do you crank up the blacks in camera?

I wanna achieve a very mysterious feel...it's a scene in a bar...a meeting between an informant and a second man. The informant is about to give him information about a missing girl. It's at closing time, at night. They're alone.... and so on...

But I want to play with shadows...and make the informant look bigger etc.

Also...this has to be a low key lighting setup...

Any more input is welcome...

I hope the DVX100 can keep up with what I want to create.

Yes, I will use an external monitor to preview the B&W.

This might be pretty basic to some, but will definitely set you in the right direction for lighting is this: start with a dark room. That is, no lights. Then put in your key and add light where you want it. Focus the light on what you want or think is important to see. And since it is noir, leave everything else in the darkness.

And remember, black and white is all about texture. You won't have color to help you separate things in the film space.
