What kind of DV tapes do you use/recommend?

Hey everyone,

I am buying my DVX100B next week at B&H. I am really excited! Before I put my regular Panasonic Mini DV tapes into this beauty, I wanted to know what you guys use. I know I should spring for Pro-Tapes from Panasonic and not use consumer ones. Where do you all buy yours from?

Thanks!

I just logged on to dvxuser to post a similar thread.

First off, it's recommended that you use the panasonic tapes. It's also recommended that for optimal quality you use the pq's or the amq's.

So my question to add to this is. I've been using the pq's for the longest time, and decided, why not upgrade to the amq? They're better quality. So I went and did this but I've been noticing my footage coming out much darker when I capture than on my lcd display.

Do the amq tapes darken your images, or is it just me?

It's just you

the only difference between any tape is 1) lubrication, and 2) quality of tape

I have been using innexpensive tapes my entire way through using mini DV, and rarely if never get drop outs. Again, i strongly recommend that whichever tape you go for, stick with it, to avoid hurting your camera heads.

Yea, I've heard that. My friend with a DVX100b told me not to change tapes.

tape wont change the footage. its digital, its not going darker or lighter or anything. Dropouts can occur with the cheaper tapes, but many get by just fine with them. If you're doing alot of paying work I'd go for the AMQ's exclusively. Telling the client the footage has dropouts because you saved a few bucks when you bought tape isnt cool. ANd then there's the lube issue. Stick with one brand.
