My first film, "For Better or Worse"

Hey man, I didn't make it through. Just scrubbed through it after the first scene.

I think the acting was well played for the intro coffee scene, although the composition could have been a tide better/tighter. Maybe bring it in a little on some of the shots, and watch for your head room.

The coffee spilling didn't feel right.

The sound was good, and so was the score!

What camera did you use? And what did you use for audio?

Give us some details man, it's not bad for your first short!

Keep it up, and don't quit.

Robbie

Thanks for the comments, Robbie. I'd received my HVX 200 about ten days before I began shooting and didn't have enough time to learn all the bells and whistles. I shot it mostly in mini DV 24p except for some of the slow motion footage which I shot 720 24PN at 60 fps and then down scaled to standard def. The music is by the artist Justin R. Durban except for the final track which is performed by, The KOO.

Most of the on location audio I got sucked, so I ADR'd all the dialogue back at my house with a cheap mic I rented from a local Doo Wop shop (sorry, I don't remember what kind of mic, but it wasn't a shotgun).

I edited on Premiere Pro 2.0 and FX with After Effects 7.0

Thanks again for you comments.

I thought this was pretty dang good for a first.
Your head room looked alright to me.
You have a part near the start where it jumps from a closeup of husband at bar to cu of him in the building, kind of jarring. You spend to much time repeating shots(eye in rifle, that whole sniper scene actually, it's revisted too many times for too long).
I really like how you used the cup of coffee.
All in all I think this movie would benefit if cut down to 7-8 minutes.
Congrats on ya first.

Yea I agree with STYLZ. You could have taken out some of the shots going back and forth with the sniper but i see what kind of emotion you were trying to build up with it. Overall, I thought it was pretty good! Nice job!

This is the first non-35mm adapter short I fully watched without turning it off cause of the video-look. Good acting, sound and playing with the temporal order.

So he'll commit suicide?

The acting was pretty hard to stomach, as well as the writing.

Technically, it's well put together. The sound mix is clean, maybe a bit too clean. There's never really a whole lot of ambient or background sound. The whole shooting sequence was well done, I enjoyed that. I liked the guy who played the husband as well. The lighting... for such a dark film, it looks pretty bright overall.

Not bad at all for a first film, that's for sure. Keep on shooting!

Very good for your first!
I really loved the opening sequence with the guy walking to the car with the case. Well done!

Pretty good editing as well, and the framing was fine.
The acting was sub par and the audio does need some more ambient noise.

I think I still would have had the guy spill his coffee. That way it wouldn't seem like you misled your audience so much.

I also loved the transition shot via the scope.

Nice work. Keep at it!

Mike

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll take your thoughts under advisement for things to work on.

Mike, you suggested that I should still have the guys spill his coffee so as not to fool the audience. I actually did that, if you'll notice in the end. Its just not in slow motion. Thanks again.
