TV commercials on HPX 502?

Has anyone here in Australia used the 502/500 in any national TV commercial work?
I've been holding off on our next camera purchase for about 5 months now, and finally one of our major clients is preparing for their next TV campaign. We would normaly shoot this on Digi Beta, they are now requesting we shoot HD.

So if anyone here in Aus (or anywhere else) has shot any commercials on this camera I would love to here what the response was from the client and the stations or even your thoughts on how the images looks when broadcasted.

Gary.

I've shot three moderate budget TVCs on the HPX502 and the response has been very positive.

The general comments have been along the lines of 'what did you shoot that on? it looks great...."

Where in Oz are you?

We are on the Gold Coast in Qld.

You can tell that at a lot of the commercials here in Aus are starting to be shot on some sort of HD camera. I was on a shoot not long ago in which the client insisted we use 16mm, at the end of the day when it went to air I was wasnt that overly impressed, it would have been so much quicker and easier to shoot in HD, cost would have been cheaper and we wouldnt have wasted a week on the telecine transfer.

The 502 fits nicely into our budget. If all goes well I could be ordering one in within a few weeks.

Did you buy the 502?

Hi Gary. Ill be returning to Gold Coast shortly - maybe your competition :P Im packing the HPX, Ive used it for just about everything. Seriously if your client insisted on 16 mm for a broadcast commercial then they need educating. If you have about 5 weeks to decide, Ill bring the camera in for a visit.

Well EdiusFX and I were just on a shoot yesterday for Corporation for Public Broadcasting. We were shooting their new national spots with 2 HPX 500's.

I've also shot a Atlanta Thrashers commercial with the 500.

Both were with the standard lens.

I'm putting up a new hi def demo on my website soon so I'll post the link when it's ready.

Thanks Noel, Ive never even used the HPX or any Pana camera at all, I've allways been a Sony user.
Sony just dont have what I'm after at the moment and most certainly not at my price either. I have seen footage that a friend shot on the 505 although it was only on his PC screen it was quite impressive, quite different than watching compressed quicktime files that Ive downloaded here.
Did you buy your camera here or in Japan?

In case you didn't notice my location - I'm in Aust.....

My major TVC client is a branch of one of the biggies in the business. Quite sometime ago they decided to not bother quoting on 16mm due to the results we were getting on DvcPro50. Lately I've shot some jobs on my HVX202 - without even a matte box or cine lens or filters..... oh dear... it doesn't look cool.....

This year I've shoot for 4 weeks on TVCs on the 502 in a row. Observations? A very useful bit of kit.

Did I buy it? No.... much to Lemac's delight.... I rented for that period.....

I just shot a new Bose TVC on the HPX502en, excellent...PM me if you need some help.

Trying to decide where I should purchase the 502 here in Aus or over seas?
Any advice?
We are scheduled to shoot in 2 weeks so time is running out I may have hire this time. (Lemac)

Is the Bose TVC going National? Would love to see it.

Out of interest, what did you guys shoot your TVC's in 720 or 1080?
I just got a price from Procam in brisbane for the 502, $500 a day with the lens and 4 16gb cards.

Both mine were shot in 720. One was in PN and one 720P because we had to do slow motion. It is cheap. Is that for a full package or just the camera? My camera goes for 600us for a package.

The package consists of Camera standard non HD lens with doubler, 4 x 16Gb P2 cards, Miller tripod, 4 x BP-L90 Batteries and charger.

I have orderd a HD lens and mattbox with the package rather than the standard lens, although it seems according to another thread here there is not much difference if any at all between a SD and HD lens.

Sounds great. What monitor are they giving you?
Check out the sd lens before you leave the shop on good hd-sdi monitor.
Side by side with an HD lens if you can and let your good eyes be your guide.
Oh and good luck!

I would suggest buying the HPX502 from Amber Technologies ask for Michael Sanders, Say you spoke to Andrew from Spearhead Advertising in Melbourne.

He will im sure get u a great deal, as he did with me.

Unfortunately the BOSE TVC will be shown only in Melb/Adelaide/Canberra for the time being.

If you need some help with workflow, have u seen the magazine 16:9 we publish that.

If you give me an address (PM Me) i will send a copy over.

That will help with new product launches and workflow.

Hopefully this helps, if it doesnt Pm me and we will talk over the phone if you wish....good luck.

Thanks Andrew, I'll be calling Amber Tech on Monday.

I have booked in the hire of the Camera and a HD lens for our shoot, but if it works out that we can purchase one for a nice price instead then I'll go with that and just rent the Lens and monitor.

The Monitor is a 14inch HD CRT.

I just shot (directed) a national ad for an Aussie vitamin company on a HPX3000 last week. We shot in AVC-Intra 100 1920x1080P. Looks very nice. editing this week. I would have liked to use the VFR of the 502 but I wanted the rez and the 10-bit recording.

G’day Peter, a wise choice using the HPX3000 I’m not overly impressed with 502. We shoot TVCs using the DVCPro 50 codec a Fujinon HA16x6.3 BERM lens and I hate to admit it but the picks we were getting from the JVC HD250 seemed slightly nicer for a lot less money when broadcast.
