1394Host Connects, but MCR Menu options not highlighted

Hey, anyone experienced this? After hard drive is connected, using Mac laptop, the MCR menu in the camera is there, but nothing highlighted except "setup" with option "verify: on/off". I need to copy off and shoot again; please help if you can.
Thank you!

No Replies?? I Need Help.

I'm surprised some of you tech guys that read here frequently have not posted anything to my request for help. I mean come on. We're dealing with new technology. I can't get my f---ing footage off my f--ing P2 cards, and I have another shoot in 2 days in another state with new crew that has NOT YET WORKED WITH THIS TECHNOLOGY. Anyone want to dialogue now about what camera to buy??

I've been so pro P2 I bought the most expensive camera in my life. It's either malfunctioning or there is some operational secret, if not possible ERROR that has yet to be cleared up. Panasonic of course takes TOO LONG to respond, and based on previous experience with them, they really might not have an answer.

Anyone?

hi there, your problem is very vauge can you please state clearly, what you are trying to do and the problem you are having, if you are offloading from the camera to a laptop it should be set to 1394DEVICE not 1394HOST, if you are offloading straight to a hard drive the FS is irrellivant cause the camera will format it anyway

Thanks for the reply. I'm simply dumping straight to an external fire wire hard drive. It's not a Fire Store...is that what you meant by FS?

Normally, once the devices are linked up and the camera recognizes the firewire connection, when I go into the MCR mode and the "copy to harddrive" menu option comes up, I select that and off we go. But that option, and the others, are all there, except they're greyed out--all except "set up", and the sub-option "verify". So I am not able to copy the footage. It acts like this regardless of the P2 cards I use, of different days shot or formats.

Thanks for any leads or insight.

Nice flaming there in your 2nd post, Greener. Not going to garner much sympathy that way. Rather than perhaps posting additional information, you're just blaming your problem on anything OTHER than operator error. Pros will first look to what they're possibly doing wrong, rather than blaming someone/something else.

That said, in 1st post you talk of using MCR and a Mac laptop. In last post, you say you're going straight to a 1394 drive. Which is it? You cannot "bridge" through a laptop to dump to a drive via camera. It needs to be a direct 1394 connection to an ext HDD. You CAN use the 500 as a Device, which will then appear as multiple drives on the laptop.

Also, when I was testing HDD direct offloads, I did find that at least 1 brand of 1394 enclosure wasn't recognized by the 500. Not all ext enclosure chipsets are the same. I also found that "direct to hdd" was VERY slow & cumbersome, as far as the drive management went. My favored approach is to use a Dual Adapter on a Macbookpro and transfer cards to an external SATA RAID 1, using P2CMS. Very safe, fast and verified. If not in a hurry to re-use cards, I simply plug 500 in via 1394 & copy that way (no card swapping).

Firewire connection run-around

Firewire connection run-around

A cerebral response, EditingFX, is why I posted in this forum, not sympathy-the last thing to expect in this business. And this professional has been editing professionally since before we had non-linear editing. I would never rule out operator error. That is one reason why one would turn to a forum for trouble shooting, especially regarding new technology which definitely has it's issues.

Each post I have added additional information. Information that may be beneficial to someone else who encounters this particular technical run around that is not included in the manual's error section.

Now that I've slept and had a cup of coffee, I think the logical sequence of trouble shooting would begin with the harddrive, since that is the device the camera is not happy with. Harddrive speed has nothing to do with it; the camera is recognizing the connection but not allowing user options. The drive was not formatted by the camera but by the Mac, and I now think that the formatting is the problem. I cannot reformat it since it has footage on it; yet that option is not highlighted either, meaning it is not selectable, yet the menu is there.

My connections and menu sequences are all correct. I can connect directly to the Mac as a device, but I do not have enough space on the internal harddrive to copy, and I do not want to have to copy footage twice every time as a work-around. Each time I copied from the cards inside the camera to a harddrive before, I had the harddrive connected to the laptop and I could view the copy as it happened. The camera is picking up the 1394 Host, but since the options are not highlighted, not even to reformat....I can only think to try a new harddrive, which will trigger the camera to format it.

So I'm going to buy, yet another, harddrive, so I can format it with the camera, although I still think this theoretically should not be necessary. In case anyone cares about the outcome, for your own benefit, I will post what happens.

I had the same problem using a Western Digital HDD. When i switched to a Maxtor HDD, the problem dissapeared. All options became available

Formatting was the problem

Formatting was the problem

Thanks Herzog. Is it "her zog" that is god, or is "herzog" god? Just wondering.

The drive I have problems with is a Western Digital.

I bought a new drive, a Seagate, formatted it on Mac first then with camera and it is doing the transfer. The previous drive I now remember never was connected to the camera, but formatted on Mac only. Ha!! Best to format all drives with camera before using drive.

On the social note, when someone is frustrated and pissed off with technological problems (as if any of you have never experienced that) complaining about that person being pissed off only makes you the :crybaby:

Good luck everyone.
