BROKEN the FEATURE FILM - TEST SCENE w/MOVIE STARS

ugafan said:
i thought the whole appeal of "broken" was that it proved you could make a good looking horror film on the cheap. what gives?

It was. The story got away from us. I do want to make film on a budget but I would like to go up in budget. Can't make a living on $8000 shorts!

Just trying to make it bro!!!

I can vouch for the DVD and its is very much worth it for the price that they are charging. Its also extremely inspiring becuase it shows their hard work is what pulled it off not so much the 8,000 dollar budget.

Also I think making Broken for anything but the budget they need would be doing the film a disservice. I think in todays filmmaking world a budget like that really isnt much considering how much budgets are skyrocketing these days.

Hey Guys,

Now don't get excited but we shot a few scenes last summer for the feature film version of BROKEN. This scene stars the lovely Paula Garces (Harold and Kumar, The Shield) and Diego Serrano (24, Arli$$). It was shot on the DVX 100a 24p in a day, with a crew made up of mostly students, except for all the department heads.

Goto: http://www.alexferrari.com/work.html and click on "Soulless" (the new name for the BROKEN feature film. Check it out and let me know what you think.

As for updates on the feature version:

We were approached by a ton of hollywood studios and producers but the script Jorge and I wrote was a bit ambitious ($35-$50 million to do it right). The studios weren't willing to give a "first time" director a shot on such a big budget (totally understandable). That's why I wrote my next project "Red Princess Blues" for a $1-$2 million budget in mind, much more doable. As for BROKEN aka SOULLESS, only time will tell if we will ever get to make it.:crybaby:

Anyway gotta move forward. Let me know what you think.

Great short Alex.Broken or Soulless is a good story. Anyway I'm always cynical about Hollywood film industry politics. Hollywood has spent a ton of money on flops made by veteran movie directors,i.e. my fav director Michael Mann's 2006- MIAMI VICE, The Insider ; John McTierman who directed The Hunt For Red October,Predator, and Die Hard. He bombed out with The Last Action Hero. Hollywood is very good screwing up a good story. I know it's a on going debate on what particulars a movie goer would look at before he decide to go to a movie, the director or the story. My bet is the story. I wonder how many kids know Sam Raimi or Gore Verbinski or Chris Miller?lol. OK I'm stepping down off soap box.

I think you should go ahead and make SOULLESS with the DVX100A's and send it straight to DVD. That's the whole idea of the DVX or HVX camera anyway...right? And that is to tell Hollywood to "screw you" we can make it ourselves with our cheap 3ccd camera's. I know you want to do it right but hey maybe you can rewrite(there is that Hollywood word) so that you can make it yourself.

Thanks for the kind words man. I don't think we can make the Soulless on a low budget. It's like trying to make The Matrix on $100,000 and MiniDV but don't worry we'll still stick it to the man with our next project :dankk2:

OK, so the media whoreing for "Cyn" has begun. Here is a podcast interview I did for the magazine SheUnlimited in LA: http://www.sheunlimited.com/wp/?p=938

Let me know what you guys think...below

Alex Ferrari: The New Quentin Tarantino? (this is crazy by the way...)

Having founded the Enigma Factory in 1997, Alex Ferrari is well on his way to becoming a film phenomenon. Broken, a short film critically acclaimed by Robert Ebert, the Chicago Sun Times, Film Focus UK and Movies Online among many, many more, is one of the most celebrated short films of recent years- and was astoundingly all shot on an $8000 budget. Among his other successes are Daddy’s Home (a sensitive and thought provoking film on the effects of domestic violence seen through a child’s eyes) and producing Behind Forgotten Eyes (a documentary that tells the story of a few women who bravely came forward and spoke of a time in Korean history which many would like to forget- the taking of more than 200,000 Korean women and girls to serve as sexual slaves).

Cyn, his new film, is a trimmed down version of a longer script he created for his upcoming feature film project called ‘Red Princess Blues’. As he developed the Princess short film, he realised that it had less and less in common with his feature project. So then he created Cyn, which was done for under $1000 and, incredibly in six days. Currently on its journey around the festival circuit, its trailer is available for viewing at www.alittlecyn.com.

Alex Ferrari has a unique talent that has some in the industry comparing him to Quentin Tarantino. His films affect anyone who goes to see them. No matter the subject or the budget, Alex Ferrari approaches each film in a daringly thought provoking way.

For more info goto: http://www.enigmafactory.com/workshops_purchase.html

Independent filmmaking is alive and well, its independent distribution that is dead. At a time when "independent" films have to have a star and at least a couple million-dollar budget, how do you get your films seen? Forget Sundance, Miramax, and HBO. These places get hundreds of submissions a year. How do you get your films seen?

From getting free media coverage to myspace, to film festivals and selling your productions through the Internet and DVD. Alex Ferrari gives you a street-level instruction and real-world examples on how to promote, distribute, and sell your production. He challenges you to assess the real market for your film and provides examples of other filmmakers getting their work out, after their films were turned down by traditional distributors.

Independent producer/director Alex Ferrari’s award-winning short film “BROKEN” (http://www.whatisbroken.com) has accomplished the following using his techniques:
- Screened in over 140 international film festivals, 85% of them without paying a submission fee.
- Had his $8000 short film reviewed by world renowned film critic Roger Ebert
- Self distributed the film on DVD and sold over 5000 units (@ $19.95) using only his website
- Attracted over 3 million unique visitors to the films website (nearly all for free)
- Has been reviewed or mentioned in over 350 world-wide news outlets including industry juggernauts:
(Ain’t It Cool News, JoBlo.com, Dark Horizons.com, Latino Review.com, Yahoo News, Movies Online.ca)

Hey Guys,

Now don't get excited but we shot a few scenes last summer for the feature film version of BROKEN. Good job Alex!--- As an actor/ film maker, I know what kind of work goes into that, and you are good. Also, shooting for
1-2 Mill for the next feature is much more realistic for big studio producers. We all know how hard it is to raise funds. That's the most frustrating thing! I've worked on things from both sides, I played Gerry Torciano on the Sopranos and also done my own shoe string budget movies as well-- acting, directing, writting etc... That's what happens when you get tired of waiting for the phone to ring..... anyway good luck on furure projects. John

Hey Guys,

I'm planning to shot the live action feature on the RED. Any experiences out there with the camera? Let me know what you guys think of the anime short film.:kali:

Yawn, but nice. Why did she "turn on the tv" when she walked in the room, but we never hear it and she never watches it?

...and if you have a nice woman in the shower, then show her taking a shower. A nice side nude shot would've been nice and classy.

The rest was slow and mundane. Good camera, good acting. Soap opera dialogue.
