Dakine and Burton Backpacks

Has anyone used a Dakine Sequence or Burton Zoom? I've read that they both have enough room for a DVX but I'm not sure if I could fit battery's, shotgun mic and other gear in there as well. Unfortunately where I live theres no chance of getting to see either first hand and its really hard to tell from the photos.

I'm currently using a Lowepro compu-trekker which is big enough but a little too bulky. I've searched these and other forums but all I could find was confirmation that they both hold a Dvx, nothing on how much room there is to spare.

Thanks!

my girlfriend manages a snowboard shop and just ordered me the Burton Zoom. Its gets shipped out monday so i will let you know when i get it how it works out, i also havent seen it yet in person but i have heard good things about it. The only things im wondering about is if its ok to keep the dvx stored vertically.

Thanks man that would be appreciated. I have my Dvx sitting vertically in my compu-trekker, and have done for a couple of years, and I've never had any problems doing so. I always take it out when I get home but when I'm traveling it will often be sitting in the pack like that for up to a couple of days and I've always been able to take it out and start filming straight afterwards.

I've been using a dakine sequence for a few years with some SLRs and a GL2. I just got a dvx and it fits fine. I got the sequence over anything burton had because it's significantly more padded. The newer Zoom may be better but the one I saw two years ago really didn't look to impact resistant.

You can strap A LOT of extra gear onto the sequence.

Hey, I know this is a long shot, and don't worry if its going to be a hassle, but if not, do you think you could take a photo of your Dvx sitting beside the open pack? It would really help me judge the scale. But don't worry if its a hassle. Its good to know that it definitely fits at least. Do you lie it on its side or have it so it closes onto the handle/mic?

Has your Burton turned up yet? I'd be really interested to hear how it works out for you if you with your Dvx, I think the Dakine might be slightly too small for what I'm after so I'm hoping the Burton is slightly bigger.

There really is no way you can find somewhere that carries these packs?

When I got the dakine, I sat in the shop for about half an hour deciding between that one and the burton. The photos I posted up do make the sequence look smaller than it is. That padded compartment is its own removable shoulder strap bag. This means there's a ton of space around it to stuff more things. Plus theres a HUGE pouch on the outside that you could hold just about anything in.

Both packs are setup for SLRs, but have the modular pads with velcro that you can move around to fit whatever you need.

What made me go with the sequence were the following:

Burlier zippers than the burton

The added padding of the internal bag (this was the main reason). I take my pack out mountain biking and backcountry skiing and any extra protection is a plus.

The sequence is actually much sleeker when you don't have that huge outer pouch filled with something. You say the lowe you have now is kind of bulky. Look at the burton. It's like carrying a suitcase on your back.

FWIW, I can fit my camera, several tapes, two batteries and filters in the padded compartment, plus a palmcorder I use for a helmet cam, a 200 ft climbing rope, a zipline camera trolly, lunch and a few beers in/on that sequence. I've never NOT been able to fit what I need in there. But if none of my reasons apply, the burton is certainly a good pack. One thing it does have over the dakine is a water bladder pocket for a camelback.

I can't watch those youtube reviews at work, but you'll at least get to see them in a better perspective than pics.

go with kata

go with kata

the kata 205 is the way to go.
kata makes the packs for our military.
well thought out design.

Crap! It seems like as soon as I can narrow down to a couple of bags I find another one!!! I've been following this thread and others to find a back pack for italy in a couple of weeks. So far I like:

Dakine Sequence: Cheap($116 shipped) medium size, built in/take out separate bag, opens from the back, and has wide waist strap/belt.

Cinibag CB-22 HD Backpack LT. $170 shipped from BH, opens from the back, and has wide waist strap/belt. Can carry a laptop, looks heavy duty, water proof.

Kata HB-205 $225 +ship from BH. Look like very nice quality. More expensive, opens from front(easy to steal, but easier to get into by me). Should hold a laptop.

Petrol PCBP-1 Mini DV Hiker Backpack $230 plus shipping from BH, good size, comes with rain cover for my dvx(not sure how much I'll use), has wide waist strap/belt, caries a laptop, opens from front or is it back, anyway the opposite of where the straps are!!

Does anyone have the the last 3 that they could take/post pics of with their camera (thanks kidwoo, for doing that really helps) alvin

I have a few camera bags but end up using a regular backpack most of the time. I do a lot of hiking and skiing with the pack so I prefer something that fits well and is comfortable. I usually have an extra jacket or something in the pack and that protect the camera enough. Not to mention the regular packs are lighter than a camera pack. For camera packs, I have a Dana (it may be K2 branded) and it carries everything well and is plenty solid for a big tripod. It is back-heavy so it does not carry well for hiking or skiing. I also have an Ogio that is smaller and more portable but does not carry a tripod well. I have used LowePros and same issue with the Dana, too bulky. I would recommend a regular pack and add some padding if you think you need it. That way you have a backpack and a camera bag.

Notes:
1. My 12in laptop fits nicely. It would be hard to get anything larger than 14in in the laptop pouch.

2. The DVX handle is about 1/2 in above the velcro dividers, but I had no problem zipping the back flap.

3. I'm 5' 2" tall and the pack fits nicely without being too long for my torso. It has waist and chest straps.

4. There is no tripod holder.

5. The eyepiece is not folded up, but the rubber is pushed back.

6. I got a DVX100, GS500, Cables, small on camera light, and tapes in the back....didn't even use the side pockets yet......

Hope this helps!

Got the Dakine

Got the Dakine

Well I just got back from Italy with my DVX. I ended up getting the Dakine Sequence bag just before leaving. I was able to get it from
http://www.rememberdelaware.com/
for $90 so I couldn't pass it up. I walked all over Rome and Firenze and it worked out awesome. It was ok size as a carry on and I even stuffed my 12" ibook in for the trip. I liked the fact that you can take the inner bag out and I did take the dvx out one night that way. Comfortable bag especially with the padded waist strap and the the method of opening its main compartment.
Thanks to everyone's advice.
