Think You're Having a Bad Day at Work?

Mark, check out this other genuine shark attack photo:

i heard you should punch a shark in the nose, it's where they sense water pressure.

of course, my best advice is to go to the pool.

Hey Brian, would the "playing dead" tactic work in this case?

(I keep meaning to take up surfing, but... dang...)

Barry, they're actually sensitive creatures, playing dead will evoke a sense of compassion and remorse on their part and normally they'll release you. At that point, it's advisable to swim rapidly away and exit the water ASAP.

The other piece of advice I know from years of surfing, is that if you're being circled by a large Shark, whatever you do, do NOT become fearful. Sharks can sense fear and it drives them into a psycho-sexual frenzy which causes them to rip your body apart with their powerful jaws.

I don't know what I'm scared of worse - drowning or a shark eating me. Both are enough to keep me out of the ocean. Had a near-death experience when I fell in a sand trap when I was little and has definitely freaked me out of going back in.

I can swim, but I happily do it in a pool...where there's no sharks to rip my body apart.

Drowning by a mile!

I saw a show with drowning victims who were resuscitated (of course).
All
of them said that after the initial panic was over there was a calming moment and almost a sense of euphoria.

Lack of oxygen to the brain tends to do that.

Much better than being torn to pieces.

I almost drowned once in big surf and right before I thought that 'this is it', I strangely wasn't panicked or freaked out. Just like 'This is it.'

I'd rather drown than get eaten alive.

The one thing we should have learned from Roy Scheider (RIP) in Jaws is though we think we need a bigger boat (camera, edit system, etc) we need to overcome our fears and take down the big, bad shark with just the equipment we have on the boat.

Very interesting thoughts guys. I always thought it might be an absolute panic right 'til the bitter end. Maybe not so much huh? Lack of oxygen to the brain does strange things and if euphoric is a feeling, felt right before death...it definitely beats out being eaten.

Another few dead giveaways being that (a) the British Navy does not, and never has operated the HH-60 helicopter (b) if you look at the tail you can see where the USAF insignia was kind of crudely blotched out and (c) the Golden Gate Bridge, in the background, is not located in Australia.

People email me this crap all the time... including the old Mr. Rogers was a Navy Seal bit... I don't get the fun in these urban legends. I guess if you're the one who started it then it would be funny to see it come back to you at some point in the future.

One year at thanksgiving... my mom took out the turkey just as the thermometer was due to pop out... and because of how well the turkey was sealed with stuffing there was excess pressure built up... and when she opened the oven the thermometer popped out and stuck her in the jugular... we had to rush her to the hospital... but everything worked out alright and we had thanksgiving dinner in her hospital room later that night. I'll see if I can find a picture, but in the meantime be sure to tell all your friends... this story has already been published in the Botswanian Reporter... right under a Dennis the Menace cartoon... on page 6... so it's true.
