Best Buy and the Vulcan mind meld

It's a good ad, but not sure if it's as effective as they'd like. People who get the reference will be more likely to be like McGee and William. They're wanting to target the more general consumer, but I'm not sure how much that ad does it. Still, a step up from where they've been over the past year with their lame "I promise" campaign.

It's Test Buy, not Best Buy. They suck on virtually every level. I always try to buy elsewhere. I do buy stuff from them occasionally... but not often... it's only for "emergencies" and never anything pricey.

How many times have you bought something from them only to find that it was a return? The box was taped shut, like all of them... then you get home and the power cord is wound like a ball of string.

Hey I can sympathize, but I'm just sayin'... it's a return. That has happened to me a couple times through the years.

I actually have the mother of all anti-Best Buy stories that involves extended warranties and an overly zealous employee... I will make this short, but the gist is that some guy was trying really hard to pressure me on an extended warranty on a car stereo (like 6 years ago now, but I never forgot this)... and he kept insisting on writing it into the paper (remember the paper tickets that you took up front?)... and anyway, I finally said something to the effect of "whatever you get out of this... employee rewards or whatever... I'm sorry but I'm not buying the extended warranty"... then the guy said, "I'll bet you a thousand dollars that I don't get anything for selling you an extended warranty"... and I said "yeah sure, I'll bet you a thousand dollars that you don't get anything (sarcastically)" and the guy starts getting in my face and saying that he is going to sue me for a thousand bucks! He literally is following me around the store raising his voice more and more as I'm looking for a manager to explain that they have a weirdo working for them... and when the two of us finally get to a manager she laughs is off as the kid is like an autistic child going on about "the bet"... and I couldn't believe it as she tries to explain to me that John is "over-zealous"... and she laughs the whole thing off!

From that point on... I say f*ck Best Buy... I never buy ANYTHING from them if I can help it... I HATE that store... and get this... when I was 20 years old I WORKED THERE and loved it! There was some odd-ball change that happened several years after I quit and yeah, being jerks became the company policy.

I ignore the sales staff there. But they tend to have the best brick-and-mortar prices for things I want NOW, and I steadfastly refuse to step inside any Circuit City.

The problem is that they are almost never the "best buy" as far as price.

Amazon is the best store bar none in my opinion.

BTW. I'll take Circuit City as the best walk in joint in our area.

I generally have good success at Best Buy, because I don't talk to any of the employees .. though sometimes me and a buddy from work would go on our lunch break and as the guys in teh computer section a lot of questions, and then later laugh at their lame attempts to snow us with their terribly wrong answers.

I have walked out of the store empty handed before, because they wouldn't stop about the extended warranty.

It's best to be self informed, no store is hiring experts as sales staff. Simply salespeople.

over the years i've gotten some good deals at best buy. whenever they offer the extended warranty, i tell them no and they leave me alone about it.

Personally I love Best Buy. In fact, I purchased my whole computer system there. I do get tired of the employees nagging on and on about the waranties and such, but because I know what I'm talking about, it is usually pretty easy to have an enjoyable expirience there.

I like Best Buy for one thing and one thing only...window shopping. There seems to be a Best Buy in every mall and I cannot deny that I get lured in nearly every time just to look at gear, tvs, cameras, computer monitors, gadgets etc....

I used to love Best Buy. In the mid-90's they were all right. They earned their success. They had most everything you needed with respect to electronics and it was usually as cheap if not cheaper than the rest.

Then, like you said Matt...something happened. I noticed it about 2000, 2001 maybe. I had to return something. I had the package, the product, the receipt etc. I don't remember what it was, maybe a universal remote, something silly. Well, the employee was dissecting all of this info and looking at it like a forensic scientist. I started to get nervous. Then, he brought the manager over. I just knew KNEW at that moment that new policy had been put forth within the Best Buy community to "Crack Down on Returns". The manager spent time looking over the stuff and I was missing something, like a manual. Something rediculous. The manager, who reminded me of Gary Cole in Office Space said, "Yeah....uhhh, sorry but we can't except this.....ahhh...if you like we'd be happy to give you store credit...ahh, yeah..."

Best Buy has forever been on my "only if I absolutely HAVE to" list. I officially hate 'em. I wish to God there was a Fry's near me....*sigh*...

Punch that mutherf*cker. :kali::nads:

I have a cousin and a nephew that work at Best Buy. The only good thing from that store is the discounts they get on products. The mark up on wires, DVDs, etc.. is huge. I bought a bunch of fire-wire cables from them for 3 bucks but they were marked as $35 and that is not even the worst case.

I avoid that store like the plague. Only other time I go in is for clearance items when you can get good product for really cheap pricing. About two months ago I got a three 320GB Seagate Freeagent Pro external Harddrives for 30bucks each. Everyonce in a while they will have something like that but usually the employees take it all for themselves if you don't find out about soon enough.

That ad was stupid. End of story.

As for Best Buy in general, I only go there for DVDs, as they're the only place local that has any selection. Although I mostly buy online now, though.

Their salespeople do need some work. They must be tortured every morning before work as punishment for not being more helpful... because they're way too helpful. I once had no fewer than four different sales people ask me if I needed help when I was standing there reading the back cover of a DVD. What insanity makes anyone think that someone who is READING the back of a product needs help? I had clearly found what I was looking for...because I was holding it.

The extended warranty thing is a bit much, but I get that they make much of their profits there. Still, I recall being offered a $10 extended warranty plan for a $19 corded phone. And I still chuckle when I think about the enthusiastic young sales kid trying to push an extended warranty by telling a customer that the $300 MP3 player they were about to buy was "one of those crappy players that breaks all the time... you really need that warranty." Great salesmanship...

My worst horror story though was when several years ago I bought a PC game there. When I got home, I found that there was no game CD in the box, only a user manual and registration card. The game was factory sealed when I got it-- not a return or anything like that. So I immediately went back to the store, and showed customer service my receipt that was time dated less than a half hour prior. All I wanted was an exchange for the same title, so I could play the game I bought. They of course accused me of stealing it. I explained to them that I just wanted a copy of the same game, not a refund, so there would be no logic in my deceiving them. They then claimed I should contact the manufacturer for a replacement copy. So...I went home and did that. The next day I got an email from the manufacturer, basically laughing at me and telling me that it's Best Buy's problem. I printed it out and returned to the store... and after almost an hour talking to more than one manager, I finally got a copy of the game I bought...
