Question about Adapters for people in Europe

Charlie Anderson

Not so clever
This is completely off topic in relation to anything but it non-the-less bothered the hell out of me so I had to post it.

I got into an argument with a filmmaker friend of mine yesterday about the movie "Once" which is shot on a sony HDV camera (don't know which one) and I asked if it was shot with an adapter, he said no because "people in England and Eurpoe don't believe in using adapters like the M2 because it destroys the artistic merit of a film".

Hmmm I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Wayne from shoot35 is from England, and there's lots of people in Eurpoe who LOVE any adapter. There's definitely decisions against using an adapter when it comes to filming for time sake and lighting sake but still I don't think that's a viable argument to say that if a few people don't like it that everyone doesn't like it.

Any thoughts or comments?

I doubt very much that this opinion is european specific, we are indeed based in the UK, about 60 - 70 % of our sales are from europe.

Jeah I'm living in Switzerland and everyone here is looking for a 35mm adapter....so I guess he was wrong...

Hehehehe.. I didn't heard of biggest stupidity for a long time..

Yeah.. We all should shoot Dogma - style... :2vrolijk_08:

Well, we keep a world map with destinations flagged and I can tell you that a lot of folks are using the Brevis in Europe. My favourite flag though is a prolific shooter (Adam Zuma) in Tanzania. I think he may have the only 35mm adapter in the country.

That is the most stereotypical thing I have ever seen on any web forum. You probably think we all drink tea and eat crumpets with the queen as well.

i live in Europe (Switzerland) and in my region every advertising is done either in 35mm film or in digital with a 35mm adapter. Nobody loves the video look for advertising and movies here.
Advertising productions below 20k are done with HDV+35mm adapter, expensiver productions are done with Arri.
This is in the whole Switzerland.
On the other hands i NEVER saw a tv program using those adapters. here and in Italy TV cameramans don't even know what d.o.f is...

Did he mean that shooting HD with an adapter doesnt come close to shooting on real film? Or did he mean that shooting anything with an adapter destroys the artistic merits of the work? Either way its a very narrowminded opinion and I would be happy to see his films to prove his point :)

I had kippers for breakfast, crumpets for tea!

Must be a sterotypical Brit today.

Tomorrow I will be mostly eating McDonalds.

Ah the McScone 'n Jam Happy Meal with Tea and a free prince phillip action figure, and then a Roast Beef McFlurry..... on the veranda... with jives the butler standing at the side with a monocle and a silver plate with a white doily on it.

No idea, I'll ask him about it tonight. I don't know where he stands on the subject of HD (as far as I know he's not keen on it) and he doesn't like the use of the adapters because he says "the DOF looks fake and unrealistic as opposed to using a stock lens". What that means I have no idea. I'm not going to post his stuff on a public forum as that's his place to do so and I'm by no means putting him down in any way, shape, or form. I'm just trying to get opinions from others as sometimes I don't know where these ideas come from and how to react/respond so I turn to those who are out there doing things and would have a better understanding of these things than I could.

Personally I love the DOF of the adapters and how the footage looks with the Zeiss lenses that I have. It's incredible and I can't go back to stock now (or rather I'm very picky when I have to for time sake and what have you). I like the DVX a lot, but I will always shoot HD and then downconvert to SD if I can.
