Spy Satellite Shootdown

Why don't they just use a frickin' laser?

1,000 pounds of hydrazine fuel! I hope they don't screw this up, hydrazine is no joke. I was a Haz-Mat inspector in the Air Force, we use hydrazine in our F-16's and it is our biggest concern durring inspections. I can only imagine some screwup involving the 1,000 lb tank of it crashing to the earth in a populated area because of a calculation error and killing thousands...oh wait the government would never make a mistake, thats why the satellite went into orbit in full working order...

i followed that link and found that metorite crashed into oregan there related
itsa concpiracy!!!!

thats a conspiracy toooo!!!

Are you suggesting I am part of some big Government conspiracy? Well...ummm...I'm....uhhh...not? :lipsrseal

PS: ATTN. SAD MAX - Next time link to an article from FOX News, one I can actually trust. :cheesy: (Just trying to explore the lighter side of life, no need to erupt into a firey political debate. Hahaha.) - Is that a conspiracy too? :undecided

Oh we totally pwned that satellite. Now it has to burn up and land in the ocean... or desert... or... yeah...

Well, from an engineering point of view it would be grossly ineffective way to do it, the power required to "blow" up using laser would require a small power plant big enough to power New York* (not based upon any real calculations don't call me on it)

The idea of using lasers as an weapon has been tried and experimented with by the US air force, and well lets just say we know what is doable and what aint :)

I'd think that in the 50 years that lasers have been with us, if they could be effectively weaponized, they would be by now.

I don't agree.

The support technologies have advanced tremendously, with room for further advancement. In large part that's what makes directed-energy weapons practical, not the discovery of the lasing principle itself.

Well one way a laser could be used as an effective weapon is if you could use one of those cheap laser pointers and then point that into your enemys pilots eye (assuming you are close enough in a dog fight) thus the temporary blindness casusing him/her to crash.... :cheesy:

It's been tried.

Some jokers out there have been illuminating the cockpits of commercial aircraft on final approach.

The FAA doesn't like it.

You develop what you need to accomplish the task at hand. Personal computers were developed to get a man to the Moon; it wasn't the other way around.
