Core 2 Quad - Q6600 Latest Generation

Nothing shorter than Quad for me. And, about to take a go at Leopard here this weekend.

Computer hardware is disgusting, though. My rig is outdated and almost a year old. ALMOST. Not even, actually. I need to upgrade pretty soon but who has money to keep dumping into hardware like that?

Okay so you went Intel then. What about video card? Memory type and amount? Disks (raid)? etc.

This is why I was asking about this as I had some vague memory of people doing this and being successful. I too would like to know more about running FCP on a PC and what all it takes. Sounds like we have a better choice than Linux finally in the PC world.

You need a good Video Card and at least 2 gigs of DDR2-667 to run FCP smooth.

To DESTROY in FCP? Well, here's my rig:

Asus P5k-E WiFi Board
Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz
4 Gigs of DDR2-1200 Ballistix
nVidia GeF0rce 7900GS 512mb Video Card
2 x 500gb Seagate 7200.10 Perp HDDs
2 x 250gb Seagate 7200.10 Perp HDDs
Extra Firewire Controller/Card

That's excluding the expenses on screen real-estate.

And my system is OUTDATED. >\ I need to update to Penryn, better GPU, DDR3 and some 7200.11 Perp HDDS.

I run FCP, Motion, and everything else without a hitch. Premiere shines in XP as well.

There IS a very noticable difference between a Quad Core @ 3.6 Ghz and a Dual Core @ 3.6Ghz. I've gone through the trouble of rendering out sequences and the Quad trounced all over the Dual Core.

When I can find my results I'll post.

Well, seems like we have hijacked this thread pretty successfully. :) Sorry about that.
But Kholi, if you are trying leopard this weekend, do you mind if I come over and help and watch and learn???
Thanks,
Luis

Yeah that's fine!! LoL. Major hiJack but USLatin started it! =B

Britney says I have to clean up if I have company but you're welcome to sit in my tiny room. Tell Matty to come to so I can harass him.

there's even a way to convert a $400 8800gtx videocard into a $3000 quadro 5600, of course it's only 768mb instead of the 1.5gb like the quadro, but still...

back on topic, any idea of when the CL-MF0150's will be back in stock?

April for 150's. We're all hoping early. =T

I wouldn't bother converting the 8800 into a Quadro with the nJect deal. It's good enough as it is, honestly.

the only reason to conver it to a quadro 5600 would be if you are using a 3d software like Max of Maya. they usually have drivers that are optimized for that software that makes a huge improvement in performance when viewing models with lots of verteces.

April is what we're shooting for on the MF0150. That's all I know for now.

I don't think purely editing / compositing software can benefit from a Quadro. The 8800 seems to be good enough for editing and normal purposes.

You guys do realize it is illegal to run os X on anything but Apple Hardware. Besides that, any future update to the OS or FCP could stop the show.

Im not the moral police, just a happy Mac user.

Rich,

You can't buy a copy of OS X that runs on Non-Apple Hardware!

"The hacked version of OSx86 is based on pirated software, which came from copies of the operating system sent to participants in the Apple Developer Connection. The ADC participants also received MacIntel computers for testing and development."

"The hacked OSx86 bypasses a chip, the Trusted Platform Module, or TPM, that is intended to prevent the system from running on ordinary PCs.
"We have even gone so far as to remove the TPM kernel extension called AppleTPMACPI.kext entirely," said cmoski."

Does that help to explain the situation?

I do realize that building your own PC is a little cheaper, but Apple Hardware is top rated quality computers and in most cases is cheaper than a Dell configured the same way.

No comment on illegalities.

However, my FCP is up to date. You're wrong about that.

And Leopard .2 update works. =B Another wrong about that scenario.

Apple Hardware is no different from PC hardware. It's all the same. Instead, you get a Server Board in a Mac Machine and you stick to ECC ram.

Pirating the software would be illegal. Buying a copy of OSX at The Apple Store, and then modifying it to remove the check for "am I running on authentic Apple hardware" would certainly break the end-user license agreement, but would it actually constitute something "illegal"? I don't know the answer to that one...

But yes, if you just download some bittorrent copy of OSX that's flat-out illegal. If you distribute your modified software to anyone else, that's illegal (whether for free or for money). But is the act of modifying a legally-purchased copy, for your own use and only your own use, "illegal"? Is it a crime punishable by law? I guess it's entirely possible that it might fall under the DMCA or something...

Quite a threadjack goin' on here!

That's my take on this too now that I know about it. Buying a legal version for your own use and modifying it can't be breaking the law.

There may be a law that says it's illegal... Whether or not that "law" would hold up if tested in court is another matter in my opinion.

Jason

Right. But I doubt it would get to court. Might create a lot of publicity Apple wouldn't want. Its one thing to prosecute someone for piracy of a broken copy that's being distributed around, but quite another to prosecute because they modified your product that they legally bought. A warranty invalidation issue at most, but federal offense? Doubtful.

Okay, when I start to hear the words "hacked, Bit Torrent, modified code", I am out. I do this for a living, I need reliability, service, support because I have people giving me large amounts of money to edit their projects.

If it's a hobby, or you are a hacker/gamer/PC builder, great, but if the bread on your table comes from having a legal, authorozed and supported system, OSX and FCP on a PC doesn't seem to be a good choice.

My .02,

Dan

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest anyone that doesn't have some sort of knowledge on the subject do it.

that said, =B My system has paid itself off three times over. Hur hur. And yeah, I use it for a living.
