H264 codec and Vegas

Hi,

The H264 codec seems very popular for efficient compression. However, Vegas doesn't seem to ship with it. It has H263. Will this do the same job?
If not, do you have to purchase Quicktime Pro to get the H264 codec or is there a download ?

Listen to Eugenia, she knows. Your tip using Sony AVC because it`s great quality and much faster than WMV safed my life multiple times over during the last two weeks when I was shooting five films on very tight deadlines. THANKS!
Matthias

Thanks for the reply.

I must have been thinking about Vegas 5. I've only just upgraded to 8. I didn't realise AVC was H264. What's the tip with the Sony AVC ?

h.263 is mostly usable under the .3gp container, so exporting in .mov does not really bring much to the user...

>What's the tip with the Sony AVC ?

What kind of tip are you looking for? Check my blog how to export with AVC to 720p for example.

Not looking for any tip but Mbwkrause made reference to a tip so I was wondering what it was. I will most certainly look on the blog. Thank you.

Generally, posting video on the web. But it's also used for Hi-Def DVD (both flavors) and HD camcorders.

It's called various things -- AVC, MP4, H.264, even WM9. Check out the Wikipedia article for some in-depth stuff.

To end the suspense: Eugenia answered a question about how to cut down render times while maintaining a good compression quality for the web on another board. I checked her tips/blog on how to compress for Vimeo, altered the settings for my application - et voilà, it cut the render times in less than half of what WMV took while looking at least as good. No vodoo, just knowledge...

So if I render out with this AVC, will it still show up as a .mov file so that online users with Quicktime 7, etc. can play it?

My previous work around has always been exporting out an uncompressed AVI, then exporting out MOV file with that via Quicktime 7 Pro. Seriously major extra time involved.

I just rendered out a WMV HD of BERLIN, and would like to get the best quality .mov file with h.264 codec

Hey Norm,

I used the built in MainConcept .mp4 compression (H.264) with Vegas Pro 8.0 for my LoveFest entry. It rendered pretty fast and I played with the bit rate settings to get a pretty good quality .mp4 at 720 X 405. The .mp4 plays fine with QuickTime.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on this stuff! :)

Is there any benefit of one vs. the other? I.e. is .mov going to be more easily accessible, or play better, look better, etc. than .mp4?

I screwed up the aspect ratio on a test, but you're right in that it DOES render a heck of a lot faster, that's for sure.

Norm,

You might want to consider playing with the Bit Rates and such. I spent some time rendering with different settings and it does affect the quality. I know it depends a lot on the size of the file, the size of the image, and any final file size limitations, but you can tweak it for quality.
