Hi,

I was wondering what the proper way was to record miming for music videos.

Anybody with experience care to comment?

Much thanks.

I think they have to have white makeup on their face and a red and white striped shirt... i'm pretty sure thats the proper way.

Nice!

What we did was hook an mp3 player with the song loaded on it through the band's PA system. They faked it along with the playback. It was nice, because it gave me an audio reference to use when editing.

Thanks guys!

I've also read about having them mimethe song at, it was either 1/2 the speed or 2 times the speed, then readjusting the playback speed in post was another technique. Not sure about this though, hooking it up to the PA system makes the most sense.

If you have the budget:

Do playback through a timecode DAT and use a Deneke smart slate.

If you have the HVX having the variable framerates and then changing the playback speed can give you some nice effects. A lot of rock ballads type stuff uses this trick a lot. And hip hop videos are just out right booty shakin slow mo.

:love4:

here's a cool trick. speed the song up to 125% and have the band play to it while shooting at 30p. then capture at 30p and conform to 24p using cinema tools (or the like) then you will have perfect 24p footage that matches the song perfectly but it is in very subtle slow motion. don't use this effect on intense moments though as it will make it not so intense...

what aobut 60i ?
what speed does the song have to be for safe transfre from 60i to 24p while keeping the synch intact?

I've done both, and I guess it depends on what post software you use. I used Avid DVexpress. 30p to 24p looked the best. 60i to 24p slowed down looks good at 50%, but it still doesn't quite cut with 24p perfectly, you can "sense" a bit of "video feel" in there. I'd post some clips online, but you really have to see it on an NTSC screen to see the difference.
