Sony EX1 Letus EX with EX1 adaptor recipe

My LEX is on the Fedex van to arrive today.

So who has the recipe to get the best out of it with the EX1?

How far do I zoom in on the GG?
Macro on or off?
EX1 lens wide open?

Any help would be appreciated to save me time in the setup.

Thanks
Steve

>How far do I zoom in on the GG?

I zoom in at z80

>Macro on or off?

off

>EX1 lens wide open?

EX1 as open as you can. Ive made some tests and noticed that you should have EX1 around 1.9 to 4 to get maximum sharpness and absolutely no artifacts from the ground glass. Use -3db and ND to achieve this.

Steve, the EX1 starts to show significant spherical aberration as it exceeds Z75, and ideally you'd use it at Z70. Additionally, max edge sharpness will be at about f8 on the camera. This is based on a very comprehensive test set we've compiled from the assorted EX1 users we're corresponding with.

Dennis.

Thanks for thr response. It's arrived and I have been out in the garden and played around with it without reading any of this. Just more or less used my Brevis settings.

Initial thoughts.
Weighs an absolute ton. The complete opposite to my Brevis, which is feather light.

What do I prefer? Brevis for weight definately. I can put it on my Steadicam flyer and its no problem. Doubt it will be the same with the Letus EX.

Build quality wise they are both manufactured very well to a high professional standard. But the LEX will have to stay on a tripod.

Image wise I don't yet know. The Brevis always gave excellent images. If the LEX does as well, it's all gravy.

I will take a look at the footage I shot later.

Thanks guys for the inputs.

Did you get the new EX-1 Achromat?

Yes I have it here. Luckily my order didn't process before the new achromat was ready so I am one of the first with it. Went out in the garden this afternoon for a play with it and got good edge to edge.

However, sky was blotchy like the grain was showing even though it was turned on. Any ideas?

I use Canon FD lenses on my LEX. Im still a bit uncertain what actually causes it.

I have only seen it with my 20mm lens. Now Ive kept all my lenses stopped at max aperture and the EX1 aperture at f1.9 to 4. Using ND filters and -3db gain I've got really sharp and beautiful images.

Its a bit tricky doing testing here in Finland now when we get sun every two weeks for a few hours :) Tomorrow should be nice though so Im going to reshoot some lake shots that I ruined keeping EX1 iris between f8 and f16.

I went out again today and had the same problem, especially when using the Nikoj 17-35mm 2.8. The sky was again all grainy. It looked fantastic in the viewfinder and the image is correctly exposed, but for some unfathomable reason the image is ruined by the grain pattern.

I shot mostly at 5.6-8 on the NIkon and 2.8-4 on the EX1.

I will have to go out and shoot the same scene and adjust the apertures through the range on both the lens and the camera and when I get back see what works and what doesn't.

the new achromat changes all this. it is sharp edge to edge all the way to z99. The smaller the aperture PRE new achromat edge to edge was better, now wide open it's perfect.
