couple 24p questions with Dvx100!

Hi. I have a few questions I want to get cleared up with myself from the capturing process to making a final mpeg 2 dvd with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, dealing with 24p footage...

1. When capturing my 24p footage, do I use the 24p project preset with Premiere Pro 2.0? It seems when I do that and I bring my raw footage in the timeline and play the video, I get a bunch of squiggly lines in my footage and sometimes it even looks interlaced, even when I made a final mpeg 2 file out of it. Then I brought it in a regular 29.97 timeline and it was fine...??

2. When I output the final movie as an MPEG 2 in Premiere, do I have to do anything with 2:3 or 3:2 pulldown option? My final dvd will be burnt as 29.97.

3. What frame rate do I use as the final MPEG 2 file I output? 29.97, 24, or 23.975?

I am basicly using this method when I want to make something look like film for my final dvd, I just need a clearup on the different speeds and whatnot. Any help to these questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

yeah, i also have the very same problem with my 24p and adobe, i am looking forward to the answer

im not exactly sure but when importing into a 24p timeline u need to shoot 24PA but when shooting 24p u need to import into a standard 29.97 timeline. thats what i have done and it works for me.

Hi

both 24p modes are actually recorded on tape at 29.97 (NTSC) after applying the pulldown. Therefore if you would capture at 23.976 you would throw away some frames. Some NLE can recognize the format automatically and remove the pulldown themselves otherwise you can do it manually e.g. with AE.

You should be able to capture either 24p standard or 24pA in PP 2.0 and PP should recognize either as 24p in a 24p project, or as 60i in a 60i project.

For DVD, if you want 29.97, render as 29.97 and PP will introduce 2:3 pulldown as it renders.

But if you have 24p material and that's all you have, there's no reason not to make a 24p DVD -- in fact, it will yield better results -- in which case you'd render as 23.976, progressive.

Hey. I am glad Im not the only one with the 24p issue in premiere. lol.

I will experiment and shoot 24pa and capture that and see if it is any better in premiere.

Now Dave, the software I am currently using to burn my DVD's is Ulead Movie Factory. I like their menu creation capabilities, etc. Now the only option for that program is to burn using 29.97 as the setting. It won't let you change anything but the bitrate. Is that ok if I am making a 24p dvd, or is there any DVD creation software out there that lets you burn a true 23.976 dvd, and would it be necessary for me? If I do need it for 24p dvd creation, what is good DVD burning software that makes menus?

Also dave, do I use the 2:3 pulldown option on the final file if I have just 24p footage?

Thanks all so far!!

No, Ulead Movie Factory won't make a 24p DVD. 29.97 it is.

Like I said, when you render your project as 29.97 MPEG-2 for DVD, Premiere will include the pulldown automatically, as it must in order to conform it to 29.97.

If you're planning to edit in 24p (as you should if you're editing only 24p footage), then always shoot 24pA.

shoot on F6 that's 24PA
try to shoot Squeeze so it will display 16x9
make a 24pa 16x9 project drop and cut
file> export> DVD
booya.
