"CONSTANCE" Brought to you by BPress- Krew East Side! Mark Harris and Timur Civan.

A few of the scenes felt a tad long but I was okay with them as I felt they added to the ambience of the whole experience. They didn't feel too long by mistake, though. It definitely appeared to be a conscious choice, considering the pacing of the whole piece.

I wanted to come back and say thanks for this Blaine. I like getting critique on my choices and people understanding that they are choices, rather than me just being stupid (which happens too).

wow, man. that looked so great! very very impressed with this.

writing a critique is hard for me on this one. i've been trying to wrap my brain around how to explain the issues i had with the piece as a whole.

first off, when i have a problem like this, it usually means the piece is excellent. this certainly was.

it left a knot in my stomach that there was something up and i couldn't put my finger on it at all until now.

in the end, i felt like this should have been either a 5 min short or a feature. and i think i wanted more, a lot more. i can imagine you taking this and using it as a way to get investors interested in funding a feature project based on the story.

that being said, one of the best entries, even though it's an NC.

that opening shot really sucks you into the mood and the story from the start. the acting was great, i liked the interstitial stuff, but some of it felt kind of forced, but you might chalk that up to my impatience to know more about your characters!

is that your ass getting beat in the first scene?

Thanks so much for the detailed critique. And yes, that would be me gettin beat...:)

Mark,
One of the things I think you've got is your own style. You're one of the few people that when I watch one of your films, it feels like a "Harris" movie. One day I hope to be able to develop my own style as well as you have. I really think this was a bunch of notches up from Katrina. I can't comment enough on how cool it is that immediately I feel like I'm watching one of "your" movies. I really dug your actors and thought they did a great job.

Really slick lighting and nice compositions as well. The beginning shot of the guy in the window is one of my favs of the fest.

There is not a whole lot to critique but I will say that as much as I liked the beginning shot, I found it a tad too long. Also, when the guy gets shot I can hear the loop playing back as there is a noticeable wheasing noise.

Great piece man. (now get yo sorry ass back to socal.)

thanks for checking it out Tim. The looping wheeze is kind of another experiment in sound, trying to give it a repetitive and kind of hypnotic quality. I will likely go back to natural.

Thanks for the comments!

Got it. I was actually wondering about whether or not that was on purpose because everything else was so polished, I thought it odd that that slipped through. But, obviously it didn't.

well sometimes I get silly with that stuff. Like the ambient noise in the last scene, some people have commented about it not being there. But it IS there, but at a very low freq, because I was going for an abstract kind of underwater feel to suggest drowning and the like. There too I will likely ditch it.

But come on, somebody throw me a bone on this one! Blaine?

I thought this was great, except sound design and voice over. Well only really two complaints about sound. The guys breathing when after he gets shot, can you say "loopty loop" in a bad way. And the Main Gangstar's voice, way too deep. I feel like im in a porno when his voice enters.

Other than that, great short, and I like.

absolutely! i've watched most of 'getting away with murder' and i think you could definitely top that building this idea (or something similar) out.

I watched an episode of that and found it a remarkably stupid and tired collection of other peoples' ideas.

That said, I am not entirely sure how Constance turns into a series. Though I could see a different sort of underworld story each series, maybe loosely connected by crime, or prostitution or one character, or something.

Thanks for showing this to me, guys!
