"Blind Date" by TheComo, Kegan Sant & John Labonney

I'm stoked to make the next fest. I wish I could just meet up with some of you guys and team up to make it...I mean, I'm getting sick of Kegan.

Just kidding, he'll always be in my projects.

I liked this story. It was very sweet.

I just wish there had been a little more conflict. It all felt like it came a little too easily for Helen and Josh.

Also, I didn't think you need the postscripts at the end.

Technically, I thought the shots were good, but it looked like all of the images were a bit soft and fuzzy. Was that a look you were going for in post?

Yup. I was going for the soft, dreamy effect. I'll post a better quality version (probably high res) in the next couple of days Chris.

Good job, Como. My only complaint was the lack of conflict between the interpreter and Josh, didn't seem like she put up enough of a fight when Josh was taking Helen to the restaurant. Great work, otherwise. The story was awesome and there was some good camera work throughout.

Hey Robbie and team. This was a good film with unique subject matter. The photography was nice and clean. The humor was pretty effective also. (I like the fact that the friend says "Bye" and hangs up. ) The scene where the guy just "kidnaps" the girl was pretty funny also.

My only complaint would be that the deaf-blind girl could have used more personality. We got to see everyone else interact. Even the interpreter, but the girl seemed a bit blank. What exactly draws the main character to the girl? Why does he keep trying? What does he like about her?

Also, the postscript may not have been the right way to go. Show rather than tell and all that. I know it's tough to do in 6 min though.

Other than that, a nice, feel-good film. Good job and looking forward to more from you.

I'll try to answer some of the questions here. Let's start with the something that bothered me and seems to have bothered some of you. Before I start with that though, a little background on Helen - her parents are deaf and all the signing was done SLOWLY. She actually taught Josh how to sign and how to read what she was signing to him. As for why her personality was a little bland, I guess that was a mistake on my end. I wasn't sure how to direct a blind/deaf girl as I'd never done it before.

I tried to get her to smile and be happier towards the end, but I guess in the scenes before she could have expressed more negative emotions to fit with the flow. Something that I should have tried to bring out of her, without words.

The soft dreamy look was done in post, but it might have been a little TOO soft. It was what we were going for to simulate a more dreamy look, but in retrospect there may have been other looks we could have experimented with.

The conflict with the interpreter and Josh, was discussed earlier in the thread. Our Martha actually wasn't able to make it and this women wasn't an actress. She helped us out, but she had a more calm personality. Wasn't able to get really fired up and angry about the situation. Conflict in general on the other hand, might not have been a bad idea...but that 6 minute deadline's a hard one!

The postscripts is something that we were really debating. I mean, having the postscripts to tell how it pans out is good...for a longer movie. Maybe leaving it up to the viewer's imagination as to what happens after is a better choice. We'll talk it over and see what we should do before we send it out to other festivals and fix any minor flaws that we can. We don't want to spend much more time on this movie, but if we can tweak it so that it is more effective when sending out to other festivals, why not?

Hopefully I got to everything,

Kegan

I thought this film was very well done. I enjoyed the story. I thought the editing, CC, and sound were nice. My only minor nit on this film is that I didn’t believe that his friend wouldn’t have told the main character about the blind deaf thing. If it was because he didn’t think he would date her otherwise, then that should have been made a clear. In the end it was minor and I really enjoyed this!

What exactly draws the main character to the girl? Why does he keep trying? What does he like about her?

His friend Mario, tells him that she's attractive, and that she's travelled, and that got Josh thinking.

Thanks everyone for the compliments and critiques

Robbie

Robbie, I am considering your age and experience here. GREAT EFFORT. I seriously hated how I had to be told the outcome. It was a very honest well thought out piece .. GOLD MEDAL!

Jack,

I'm going to ban you if you continue to change your custom title.

Totally kidding, you know I wouldn't do that :)
