New panasonic HD camera three 1/3 inch chips, "the new DVX"

Thanks Barry,

I didn't realize how much control one had with the frame rates of the HVX.

Hopefully there will be that kind of control with the 150.

I'm thinking that this is the kind of HD cam I've been hoping for. It's not the HVX but it could be more than suitable for my needs.

Seeing as it's all hardware with few moving parts I'm hoping the price you state is about right. Under $4000 CDN. Maybe even $3500.

I'd like to see firmware upgradabillity which is probable. Maybe intraframe AVCHD for the future or rates north of 24 Mbps? How about time lapse? Ah, the desires I have.

Well, one can hope.

April's a long ways away. Hell, fall is even further.

Anybody interested in a couple of DVXbs? Low mileage, treated like babies, ALWAYS had the UV filter from the moment they came out of the box and extended warranties to May 2009. You can have them in the fall for a reasonable offer.

I know, I know, take it to the marketplace. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

sincerely,

And yes, this looks like the legit new "high-def DVX".
It also looks very much like the final version of this mockup, which was almost unanimously derided as ugly and ill-designed. Just goes to show you, once some of the specs -- which seem interesting -- are announced, people forget that it looks "like someone beat a DVX with an ugly stick." In all fairness, the final version does look somewhat better designed.

? avc maybe

? avc maybe

hmmm..uhm ....maybe .....by nov 08 the cost an hvx will be 4200- 4500 compare cost and quality after the releas emaybe this maybe hvx 2.0 for the demanding class of small cam users, actauly had small demo of ex nice knee function!

Tzedekh - I agree, the new design looks night-and-day better than the ugly CES mockup.

The only downside I see to this is for freelance shooters that have to hand over the tapes at the end of a shoot. Most of the people I shoot freelance for want 60i SD on miniDV tape. I can see this type of workflow being a hard sell for those types of clients.

I know this is nitpicking, but an internal 60-80GB hard drive would have been a great feature in addition to the ability to record to SD cards.

Other than that, specs sound great for everything else.

I can't wait to come home from a shoot and just plug in my SD card to get footage into the computer ASAP. No more worrying about fraking dirty tape heads, or I can't find the specific brand of miniDV tapes that my camera likes, and if I don't get the right kind it throws a tantrum. . . . . etc.

I can't imagine this not being the replacement for the DVX-line. I mean the DVX will be approx. 5 years old this fall. It's been a great camera, but it is time for something new in the same six and price range. I think the HMC150 will be no more than $4,200.00 since Panasonic has to compete with Canon's A1 and I guess Sony's V1U (has that actually sold well due to all the knocks against it?). I can see the HMC being a little higher right away since it does do SD card recording, which the A1 doesn't do. I just don't think it can be priced too much more than the A1 though.

I wonder how long it will be until we see an AVC-HD XL-H2/XH-A2 with similar abilities? At NAB2008? What about Sony?

Hopefully the competition will heat up this year giving us all some great camera choices.

Oh, with it being switchable, it means we PAL guys can AT LAST get access to 24p on Prosumer Panasonic Camera's.

And makes me hopefull that they build in something similar to the HVX upgrade when they get to it!

Hi Folks,

Have not read all the way through this as I have way too much to do this am. Barry asked me to step in and clarify what this camera is. If you think of AVCHD as the new DV then this camera (the 150) is the new DVX100. It has 24P, it is economically priced, right where long GOP recording should be. But it is a very nice camera and it records to SD cards, just like all AVCHD cameras do.

Is it the replacement for the HVXX200, clearly no. It does not do 24P in DVCPRO HD. It doesn't do variable frame rates, it does not have P2.

Now with that information, is the 150 a great little camera, I think it will be. Is it a filmmakers camera, depends on where you want to use it. Keep in mind it is the new DV camera. Any place that bought a DV camera might like one of these. So wedding guys, schools, other institutions and high school sports. Lawyers, doctors , well you get the picture it is the new DV. Nice little camera,

Hope this helps,

Jan

great, this can be the camera I was long waiting for. The HVX was a bit overkill for me and so would be an new HVX, but the birth of this new generation , wow, I want...

Having read all the posts here so far, if I had the budget, I would still prefer to go with the HVX200 camera. I still think that DVC-ProHD image is superior to the AVC-HD MPEG4 video format due to much less compression & higher bit rate 100Mbps & being able to do over & under cranking, in-camera on the HVX200 is still a very attractive feature for me. I'm mostly a wedding videographer, but having slow-mo & sped-up footage achieved in-camera for a wedding shoot is just wonderful. Plus in terms of color sampling 4:2:2 (HVX200) is better for me than 4:2:0 (HMV150).

The only thing will be to purchase at least two P2 cards, of which are not as cheap as common SD cards. But then P2 is like rechargable batteries. Initially expensive to purchase, but can be reused again & again, though I've read somewhere that even flash-memory-based media like Compact Flash, SD, P2 have a limited read-write cycle to them (could be a hundred thousand times). What I read is that each time flash-based media get read & written to many many many times over, their oxide (conductor) layers in the card gets slowly worn out, eventually creating a micro grap which hinders anymore transfer of electrons (data) to & from the memory cards.

But for the moment, I'll still hang on to my trusty DVX100A. It's still a great camera & I love the filmic colors of the gamma curves.

It's better to wait just a bit longer before purchasing my next camera upgrade as you all know technology keeps improving at a phenomenal pace. I'm glad Panny has kept with CCD imagers in it's new line-up of HD camcorders instead of CMOS, due to CMOS's irritating rolling-shutter anomalies. CCD is solid, proven technology.

Exactly what I would expect it to be. I hoped for variable frame rates but I simply knew it was not going to happen. This camera sounds like a great thing on paper. I'm really looking forward for it to hit the marked. I'd hope for an EX1 type LCD though.

This is shaping up to be a good year for new cameras. First this camera...later on Scarlet :D

Would it be possible for Panasonic to use SD card recording for DVCpro HD in a new HVX camera?

technically I don't know but I don't see that as a possibility as P2 systems are being used in many new tv stations and also the old ones that are changing their systems to digital (for example the basque television etb has bought many HVXs and HPX500 and some of the P2 gear out there).

So doing this change would mean a bad inversion for those who have invested in P2 and I don't think panasonic wants to upset customers by closing the lower line of P2 cameras.

Now that's dedication.

Thanks for takin' the time to stop in and let us know that. That has to be information that you're not REALLY supposed to be talkin' about, but you're giving it out anyway.

Not sure about everyone else, but, I'm just stoked on the possibility of FULL FRAME 1080P Cam from Panasonic. Not to mention an image with less noise than the HVX for less. And a wider lens.

DVX100 replacement or not.

I'm more than happy with my DVX100A. That being said, if I ever decide I need to go HD, I think I've found my new camera.

This makes me hope that Panasonic is saving the big announcements for NAB - Please give me a camera to match the EX1 or at least the successor to the HVX :)

I get goosebumps imagining what the next gen HVX will be like...

It would be great to have an EX-slayer, P2 based camera. Keep the workflow, investment intact, but move into a more capable cam.

NAB should hold some interesting announcements across the board for the industry.

I think in indy filmakers/videographers are finally going to get the cake and eat it too in 08!

And the comment about the EX1 being the cam of 08... pa-leeeze.
The HVX is still holding its own (which it shouldnt be because it is out-spec'd buy the EX1, but the EX1 just doesnt blow the doors off of the HVX enough to cause a mass exodus)

Gonna be a good good year for cameras all around!!!
