New panasonic HD camera three 1/3 inch chips, "the new DVX"

Variable frame rates would be great if they implemented the AVC-INTRA codec too (the mysterius hi-profile codec secret, perhaps avc-intra 50).
I hope we must not wait too long, Panasonic needs to introduce a new line revisioned Hvx200 with Avc-intra 100 (together with the old dvcpro 100) and evr'yone will be sold. We don't need a partial product, waiting for 2009/10 to have this new codecs when they are already old! C'mon :) !

Wow. Even Stevens came out the woodwork for this press release.

Thanks guys I forgot about the Pany program to convert to DVCPRO HD.

I don't think this cam does variable frame rates. If pany did that why go HVX?

If those are all the frame rates that's fine for me, 60p is usually the one people care about the most and a lot can be done in post these days.

But the hvx still beats this codec wise, the thing to ask though is does it beat it enough to matter to 90% of us?

I sincerely hope this is the DVX replacement, and not the new HVX. I'm hoping Jan to shime in and say "yes, this is not the HVX replacement. For that, wait for NAB"

This camera can produce the sharpest footage in the world, I don't care. 1/3 CCD's are a PITA for DOF, and I hardly doubt it will be able to compete in low light to the Sony EX.

This camera is an inferior offering to the EX. And its hardly an upgrade to the HVX, either.

Seriously, seriously disappointed. :(

I invested a lot in P2 gear. I hope Panasonic rewards us early supporters, adopters with a nice new p2 handheld camera.

Scarlet, looks like You're my only hope...You or (ugh!) the Ex...

Well, still got some time. Not like the EX is gonna get anymore expensive. Gotta keep playin' the waitin' game.

For me, I still have the DVX100A & it is still a very reliable camera. I've only had one or two very minor/short drop-outs in my 3 years of wedding videography & I've only taken my camera in for servicing (cleaning tape head) twice in that 3 years.

I'm happy Pany is offering a new AVC-HD camcorder & it looks promising, with PAL/NTSC switchable compatability & the fact it records to SD cards.

However, personally, I would still prefer the HVX200 if I were to upgrade to an HD cam primarily because of the HVX200's variable framerates, stunning image quality (ProHD 4:2:2 color samples compared to AVCHD's 4:2:0), low image compression. Though I do admit that P2 cards are still expensive in my part of the world & the HVX200 can produce grainy footage in low-light. But then adding a hot-shoe video light would solve the problem anyway. Let's see how the new cam from Panny turns out.

I think the press release pretty clearly states that it's the DVX replacement. I mean, it doesn't say those exact words, but if you translate from marketing-speak into human-ese, you can see where they say "that capitalizes on the phenomenal success of its popular DV-based AG-DVX100. " To me that says plainly that this is intended to be the successor for the DVX, and that it's not an HVX replacement in any way. I'd bet my brand-new Red One that any HVX followup is going to be based on P2, not AVC-HD!

This camera is an inferior offering to the EX.
And I bet it's at least half the price of the EX as well. The EX carries a retail price of $7790, I'm betting this product will come in at $3495. Maybe $3795.

And its hardly an upgrade to the HVX, either.
Let's try this again: it's not supposed to be! It's supposed to be an upgrade to the DVX, not the HVX!

We all do. No announcements yet. This announcement is from the AVC-HD side of the business, which has no relationship to the P2 side.

The HVX user base and the professional crowd in general needs a clarification from Panasonic stating that this is not the official "upgrade". With no price announcement and a shockingly similar look to the HVX200, this camera will be commented naturaly as the HVX "successor".

The Broadcast and professional world (as well as internet forums worldwide) are buzzing about the Sony EX camera, with its 1/2 cmos chips and Cinealta branding. Announcing this 150 camera during this timing without a clear statement it is not to replace or improve the current P2 Handheld camera (which the Cinelata EX came to compete with )with a very similar form factor camera is a bad and confusing move for the not so "discerning" crowd...

Barry, Obviously I understand you reasoning and explanation. It absolutely makes sense that Panasonic introduces a sub 4k HD camera to gatter the Hv20, Canon a1 or even the Sony V1 crowd. But it should clearly be stated its position. Notice that its also under the Broadcast division. SO it will be in the same division of the HVX.

The broadcast division has a couple other AVC-HD camcorders already, being the HSC1U and this new HMC70. There is nobody, anywhere, who would confuse either of those with being in the same league, class, ballpark, universe, solar system, or galaxy with the HVX200 or HPX500.

I do think this new 150 will probably close the gap significantly in perception, and I bet there will be a lot of people confused about whether they should go HVX200 or HMC150. If the price is comparable, I agree with you that it'll be unnecessarily confusing. But if the price is comparable between the HVX and HMC150, then I think Panasonic will have made a monumental blunder.

The only thing that makes sense in this whole realm, to me, is that this is a DVX successor -- and I think the press release clearly indicates that. What will clarify it enormously is if they announce a price that's in DVX territory: $3500 to $4000. Then it'll be obviously and clearly differentiated from the $6,000 HVX200.

Until then, I guess people can be confused, but I just don't see that happening. It's AVC-HD, not AVC-Intra or DVCPRO-HD. It's SD cards, not P2 cards. It's HDMI, not HD-SDI. They don't mention variable frame rates. It's got a lower model number (150 instead of 200). I mean, seriously: although it looks a lot like the HVX, clearly it's meant to be a lower-priced model. Clearly. Not a doubt in my mind. I'd bet my left big toe that this is NOT an HVX replacement! This is a DVX replacement, not an HVX replacement. This is a V1U/XHA1 fighter, not an EX1 fighter. No question.

Hey, I just saw a picture, and yes indeed the lens is wider. The picture shows the wide end being 3.9mm, instead of the HVX's 4.2mm.

Barry, I'm really intrigued how you're still healthy with the ease you gamble your "assets"... How did you survive Vegas? :)

(this coming from someone living in the "Vegas of the East" :) )

EDIT- a wider lens? so, something actually better than the HVX?

EDIT AGAIN- Back on topic, we're already starting to see confusing posts/comments of people stating this as the response of Panasonic to the "Sony Camera"...

Man... the speculation is already out of control. I spent a few minutes googling, and these so-called "experts" with their blogs are coming up with all sorts of nonsense.

I think I'll just sit tight and keep an eye (and ear) open for official statements.

Barry, I'm really intrigued how you're still healthy with the ease you gamble your "assets"... How did you survive Vegas? :)
Ah, good point, grasshopper. I survived Vegas by never gambling at all. I guess I grew up with the figure of speech of "betting" but I'm not a gambler! An entrepreneur and a risktaker, sure. But gambling? In Vegas? You'd have to be crazy to do that... it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the $1,000,000,000.00 Bellagio wasn't built to *lose* money... :)

EDIT- a wider lens? so, something actually better than the HVX?
Wider than the HVX, yes. But we don't know what the telephoto is. And hey, who knows what else it may have that's better than the HVX... the HVX is two years old, and progress happens. Well, we do know one thing it does better than the HVX, which is that it's NTSC/PAL switchable.

EDIT AGAIN- Back on topic, we're already starting to see confusing posts/comments of people stating this as the response of Panasonic to the "Sony Camera"...
Well, we can ask Panasonic for a clarification statement then.

hmmf ... I'm not market for an upgraded dvx ... with the ability to have your pick of the litter shooting 1080 with every other camera now a days (not to mention shooting 4k with red), the fact that panasonic is settling for mediocrity and not giving me MORE with this camera almost seems ... blah.

I know i know, before jumping down my throat, I'm well aware that "THERE'S A MARKET FOR THIS CAMERA" ... i just don't fit the demographic :/

I think a lot of people like me, were waiting/hoping for an upgraded HVX ... Regardless of price, I'm not really interested in this.

I hate to jump ship on Panasonic, but EX-1 ... looks like you might own 2008 !

AVC is not the new P2 its the budget P2. If Panasonic was going to toss out the p2 they would not have released the HPX and the new slew of P2 goodies. Also P2 is being implemented across the board in more and more 3rd parties. Also new higher capacity P2s on the way.

Mini DV did not replace DV cam...

Again, I simply don't get this. This is an upgrade to the DVX. More? Sheesh, there's more "more" here than the DVX, than you can shake a stick at. Complaining that this isn't an upgrade to the HVX is like complaining that the new BMW 335i isn't an upgrade to the 750iL!

I think a lot of people like me, were waiting/hoping for an upgraded HVX
Lots of us are. This isn't it. This is something else, something new.

I hate to jump ship on Panasonic, but EX-1 ... looks like you might own 2008 !
Somebody help me here -- are you thinking that this is the only new announcement Panasonic is going to make this year? This is from the pre-NAB press releases. There will almost undoubtedly be more products announced, whether before NAB or at NAB or after NAB.

Maybe the problem is that it looks too much like an HVX, so people can't separate out that this is a whole new product?

Hey Barry,

You posted that it doesn't mention variable frame rates but in the press release it states:

"It supports a full range of HD formats including 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 1080/30p, 1080/25p, 1080/24p native; 720/60p, 720/50p, 720/30p, 720/25p, 720/24p native; and it is 50Hz/59.94Hz switchable."

Am I incorrect to assume that the cam shoots 60 fps in 720p?

Just wondering.

sincerely,

ian

No, it clearly does that. What it doesn't mention is the ability to do all the other frame rates, like 36 and 48 and 12 and such. The HVX can shoot any even frame rate from 2 to 60; this cam doesn't mention that ability. Maybe it'll have it when released, maybe they're "saving" that for an NAB announcement, or maybe it just can't do it, we don't know.

But at least it hits all the important frame rates.
