Say What?! New HD Camera from Panny!

I don't understand. What does it mean "saving AVCHD to SD?" What's SD referring to? An actual SD flash memory card??

AVCHD? Ughh. Biggest PITA format ever invented, even worse than HDV. A friend took a ton of video in China and I got elected to help him bring it into a program and edit it, it's a joke. Terrible format.

I agree. While it is indeed more efficient in therms of bitrate/encoding efficiency, its also more processor intensitive- which means only the newer top of the line computers can work efficiently with it- either that or convert to different codecs...

And 4:2:0? Long GOP?

I remember Panasonic saying not supporting Long GOP for its "Professional" gear. Isn't this camera under the Broadcast division?

Ah, marketing and big corporations. They're all the same. :(

That must be why Panasonic just released the free AVC-HD transcoder software. You should be able to record onto cheap SD cards and then convert the processor intensive AVC-HD to easy to edit DVCPRO HD.

Looks like they will have two new cams. Panasonic AG-HMC70 looks like the ugliest looking cheap camera.. YIKES.

So what does this mean? No HVX updgraded model.. The AVCHD stuff isn't something I want and having invested in P2.. means, me likey p2 so bring that into a prosumer version... or consumer for that matter, but not this codec..

No announcement yet about an upgraded HVX. That's very different from saying that there's no upgraded HVX.

Last year they announced the HPX500 and the HPX2000, but they didn't even hint at the HPX3000; they dropped that bomb at the show. So this is just a pre-NAB press release, which companies usually do around February to give the magazines enough time to get the articles printed so that NAB attendees can see those press releases written up in the magazines that they pick up at the show. But this doesn't mean that this is all they're going to announce or all that they're going to show... I don't know of any company that's ever laid out *all* their cards on the table two months before the show begins!

So, what's the big difference between P2 and AVCHD in terms of after it's in the computer. Becuase for us College students on a tight budget, P2 cards are completely out of the question.

What format does Canon's XH-A1 use? Because I LOVE that camera. And is this new one and Canon's comparable?

P2 uses industrial-strength professional codecs. AVC-HD is more of a "super-HDV".

Becuase for us College students on a tight budget, P2 cards are completely out of the question.
Well, if something's completely out of the question, why even consider it then? What does it matter what the P2 cards record, if you can't afford to use them? Makes the decision much easier! :)

Canon uses HDV. This new one uses AVC-HD, a superior format in all ways -- but basically the same kind. Long-GOP, 4:2:0, low bandwidth. This new one has a lot more in common with HDV than it does with P2.
