New panasonic HD camera three 1/3 inch chips, "the new DVX"

For 6 grand? Hmm was hoping for something in the 3 grand range. I'll probably just get an HVX instead.

That's not a hard number. Just the posters guess. And, we still have no idea what he camera really is. AVC-HD @ a high bitrate should be really nice.

Just...have to wait fo rmore info.

That's a legit press release up on the studiodaily site, Panasonic e-mailed their pre-NAB press releases.

And yes, this looks like the legit new "high-def DVX". 720p and 1080p and 1080i, plus PAL/NTSC switchable. 12 hours of footage on a single SD card! Looks an awful lot like an HVX.

No way it'll be $6,000; that's HVX pricing and this is AVC-HD. The model number is lower (150 vs. 200) so I don't expect it to have all the HVX's features, but more than the DVX had. But 20mbps AVC-HD should look fantastic -- that should be about equivalent to XDCAM-HD as far as codec performance goes.

Oooh, just saw where Crave says it'll incorporate "new" 1/3" progressive CCDs. New? Interesting, maybe it won't be the same as the HVX...

So, it may be premature, but I'll go ahead and say it: FINALLY! A high-def DVX. Recording to cheap off-the-shelf SD memory cards instead of P2 cards, opens up a new market. Now let's just hope they get the price right!

If its priced at the old DVX range count me in! More excited about the SD card recording. Ive been holding off on buying an HVX as i dont really need it at this point but im getting kinda tired of this whole tape thing :)

PUHLEASE... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be FullHD 1080p. I know it's all gimmicks, but UGH please give me a full and CLEAN 1080p frame.

And man, FINALLY, things are rolling in the Pana Camp.

I take it its HD only? No standard def option? I dont know if standard def is even an option with the AVC-HD.

The crave link also tells of the AG-MHC70 camera (1/4 inch CCD) and it's $2,500. So I think the 150 might be priced a good bit higher than what it should (I love jumping to conclusions). Dibbs on $3,799.

Drooling over the PAL/NTSC though.

New chip? As in no pixel-shifting?
Don't know. All we know is that the crave guy said "new chips". The official Panasonic press release doesn't use the word "new".

All the Panasonic cameras use spatial offset other than the HPX3000, and I'm betting it probably uses it too even though it has 2.2mpix sensors. So whether this new cam has "native pixel" chips or not, it'll still use spatial offset because every camera uses that; it's not just for boosting resolution, it also helps defeat fixed-pattern noise.

Oooh, get this: 1080/24p Native mode. No pulldown! Just a raw 1920x1080x24p signal. This would be the first AVC-HD model to support that feature; Canon's 24P AVC-HD models use 60i with 2:3 pulldown.

Barry, can you expand on the fixed-pattern noise? Do you mean that it is more present in spatially-offset systems or less?

Yeah, I noticed that Panasonic published the 1080/24PN on the 64GB P2 card specification as well. Maybe we're going to see a new wave of native 1080p from them at NAB?

Aimed at a different market though, the HMC70 is that miniature shoulder-mount camera.

I'm hoping for $2999 but I'd be happy at $3500 considering it's PAL/NTSC switchable and, hey, come on, it records to off-the-shelf SD cards. That's huge!

Where'd you get that from? ... Actually, I don't care.

FINALLY!!! The new wave of Pana cams are coming. That's what I want, native 1080p and the cleanliness of high bitrate AVC-HD.

Less present. If you don't have spatial offset there's dead zones in stripes all through your sensor. The HD100 series has higher fixed pattern noise than any other camera in its class specifically because it doesn't use spatial offset. There's a "fixed pattern" of noise on the image. Spatial offset slides the image over just a little so that at least one of the chips' photosensitive areas is gathering light in the area where the other chips' dead zones are (the "registers"). So you always have an image, instead of a dead zone full of a fixed level of noise. Make sense?

Didn't notice that, but I'd expect that was probably in reference to AVC-Intra, which also has a 1080/24pN mode.
