"I ****ING HATE YOU" – a film by SABI

SPOILERS:

This was good! It felt REAL, and that's a compliment. I really felt like I was spying on this moment. Loved the look of it as well, it was very well shot and framed.

My only gripe is that I think most women would have been running for the exit during the second or third verse of the song. :D

Seriously though, I really liked this one a lot. I'll pop by later with a deeper review.

Cheers!

Mike

Ah - that means another verse to the song, right?

Zak this was amazing... I'm honestly blown away by the raw grit and realness of it all. Everything about it just brought you there with them. wow. Nice work dude. Looking forward to the longer version.

Hey Zak,

REALLY nice work. I love that it's such a simple story zeroed in on this one specific moment in their lives and draws that moment with such beautiful and human detail.

My only beef is with the camera stuff. ONLY because the actors were so great and you clearly worked with them so well to get them not to act and just live in that story(A Herculean task in itself), that I feel like cutting around them so much does a little bit of a disservice to them. For example, I felt like just planting the camera and letting her listen to that song, she would've given everything that scene needed at that point.

It might simply be a stylistic difference between us, but whenever actors are reaching the point of lifting off the screen, I like to just get out of their way, set the camera and capture what they give.

Excellent work though. So many great and honest moments between those two.

Is this with the "first act" cut?

Just wanted to add, the way you work and your devotion to real, human material makes me really want to do something with you some time. I've done a bunch of improv work in developing scripts, but not with this nice a result yet.

Zak, great job! I loved your film!

The song is the best! LMAO!

I really liked the simplicity of this story.

The camera work was very nicely executed. I love the style. Especially that quick cut-ins on a c/u. The blurring in and out was effective though I thought that it was a little out of place on the final shots of her in the apt.

Color was interesting. The lighting was beautiful.

I also really enjoyed the sound design of this film.

Your actors, especially the guy, were perfectly cast and gave fine performances!

Great job! (boy, I can see why she left him! LOL!)

Congrats,

Ted

Excellent work! I really, really liked this, Zak.

I'll be perfectly honest - the deep orange coloring was a little bit too intense for my taste, and I think you could have cut back a bit on the shaky cam with the searching focus...

BUT

none of that really matters because your story and characters had me completely hooked the whole time. John/Ron is an awesome, more hilarious adult version of Michael Cera and I could not stop laughing when he sang that song. Marion/Carol didn't have as juicy of a role, but she didn't have to do much to get me feeling for her character...she's got skills.

The story was perfectly simple. I wish I could home in on the nucleus of an idea like you and a few others in the fest have demonstrated so well. This a great five minute story. The hiding of the mug explains everything we need to know and really endears Ron to the viewer. But you also understand Carol's side of it. No one's really at fault here, there's no bad guy, the guy doesn't get the girl, it's not high drama, it's just...reality.

Looks like you're on to something with that collaborative/sharing/improv jazz. :)

Great short. My wife liked it too.

This is my favorite of all the DVXUser Fest movies I have ever seen. Which is about 27 movies.

Great stuff Zak,
I loved John. Absolutely thought he was awesome. This is def. in my top picks man. I liked your Color grading as well. It's good to see a different style have such good results.

Also, thanks again for the help!
Tim.
