Howdy, All...

My podcast has been going strong for 200 episodes now with the Sony Z1, but this weeks our first shoot with the EX. You can find it here:

http://www.neo-fight.tv/

We have all our episodes in an archive, and it's interesting to compare this week's episode with last weeks (shot on the Z1). Especially in the close-ups (which are added in post), you can definitely tell a big difference.

We're still getting the hang of the camera, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts...

Best,

Ben

The change is astounding. Really evident in the skin tones. Was the web compression the same between episode 197 & 198.

Did you use a picture profile on the camera?

Howdy...

Yes, this is REALLY good comparison of moving from the Z1 to the EX.

We shot this under the same lighting, same editing, same compression, same bit-rate, etc... The only difference was the camera, and HDV vs XDCAM footage.

It's amazingly evident in the close up scenes, which are around a 200% scale of the original. The EX footage is much, much sharper.

We are using a picture profile. Can't remember what it is right now, but I know we're using the hi-saturation profile. Picture seems very dull without it...

Best,

Ben

So let me get this straight; these episodes are shot with one camera and the close-ups are just scaled in post??
If this is true this camera is amazing.

One other thing Ben. Is the background green screen or an actual background?

Yes, we shoot this with one camera. In fact, we have no camera-person. The camera is locked down stationary on a tripod, and we just let it roll. We try to have a 'live to tape' feeling on the show, so there are no reshoots.

I'm flattered that you think the background is a greenscreen. Actually, it's a piece of stretched lycra that was printed and then mounted on a frame. I thought it gave us a nice professional look. What do you think?

One other thing is that with this new camera, you can CLEARLY see that I'm wearing eye makeup, which is something that I was told to do back in the "SD" days, but now with this new camera, I don't think I'll be doing that anymore... too bad, 'cuz it gave me that 'Duran Duran' sort of look :-)

Best,

Ben

Ben,

Very nice production value on your show! And yes, that EX1 is incredible on the scaled up closeups. Can't do that with my old V1U's. Looks amazingly consistent whether wide or close up.

Try it as an experiment. It will help when you have to scale up as it shouldn't get as pixely.
See you have to scale the original footage from 1080 to 720 which is ok.
Then when you want to scale it up for the close ups you won't have to scale much past the 100% of the original 1080 footage.
If you're confused just try it.

It's a good thought, but that would leave me with an 720p master, as opposed to the 1080p master that I have now. I think I'd rather stick with the higher quality master in case I ever need it again.

You never know, though. I might give it a try... Thanks for the suggestion.

Best,

Ben
