Contax Zeiss lenses on LEX?

Ian, do you see Grain on your Letus using it outdoors? Any footage examples (even with the lens mount)?

My Nikon mount is nowhere near what you guys are describing. Very slight play, but nothing when using a follow focus at all.

Grain is no problem as long as I don't stop down past a 5.6. I've been shooting some simple tests with the Contax zoom- nothing I quite want to broadcast worldwide via the internet yet. I'll have something soon enough.

This weekend I've been playing with my newest acquisition, a Zeiss Jena MC 300 f4. So far I'm very pleased with it.

Aw man. I've been lookin' at the Zeiss (RED) MC series lenses. I want to pick up a Flektagon and a Pentacon. Especially the Pentacon 135mm since I missed out on the Revuenon 135mm =(

Footages! :D

I do use primarily Lomos, but I still like to have the option to use Contax and Leica slr lenses. I like the idea of using the Zeiss zooms on faster paced exterior shoots and from my preliminary test I think its viable.

ian let us know what the breathing is like on those zeiss zooms. i am pretty happy with the quality of primes but a medium priced zoom would definitely speed things up. nice reel, btw.

I second that. KEH is a very reliable seller. Their "bargain" grade is often in nearly perfect condition. I think there's a Zeiss 35/1.4 there right now.

yeah, all of them zeisses are slightly a little uncheap. you guys know if there is any difference between the german-made & the japan made? also i just found out that my 85mm f/1.4 makes some noises when shaking it (sounds like metal beads rubbing against each other) the dealer said it's normal, but wanted to run by you guys. thanks.

There's no real difference between the German and the Japanese made Contax lenses unless you're a purist collector. That rattling sound is probably you iris stop down mechanism. Mine made a tiny sound when shaked but it shouldn't be so loud. Push the stop down lever and shake the lens- does it still make the noise?

I wonder why that contax 35mm 1/4 is so expensive at grade bargain? $100 more gets the brand new zf version at f2.

Im still wondering what this lens is like, anyone?

the sound becomes smaller however it is still pretty loud. I understand when mounted on the camera, I probably wouldn't be shaking it.

Tocad America (Repair techs for Contax cameras/lenses) stated it was bearings and wanted me to ship the lens to them for repair.

Since you stated that it is part of the iris, will this problem affect the image when camera is in motion?

Thanks.

The Zeiss 35/1.4 is a gorgeous lens, very sharp, even field resolution and well corrected for close focus. Excellent bokeh too. It was one of my favs when I had my M2.

Willis, if your lens stops down properly you probably won't need to send it in for repair. Just keep an eye/ear on it and if it get too bad you might need to address it. Otherwise use it in good health.

thanks ian, i just took a trip down to a local camera store, they claimed it was a loose spring element that won't affect the way we shoot unless we are shaking our cameras like crazy while shooting. my 25mm f/2.8 just came, wasn't aware of it but it's german made, since there's no difference between the 2 in quality, im happy. thanks for all the info.
