Face of Justice - A Western

Wow, It's been a while. The last few months have been some of the most stressful of my life, as we worked to get the movie finished.

A lot has happened. ADR, sound design, color grading, FX, etc. We're mixing yesterday and today. Things stand at 98% complete.

Herman delivered the final score last week. It's absolutely mind blowing.

Face of Justice will premiere on December 13th, at the Hollywood Theater (42nd and Sandy) in Portland, along with another hour and a half of work from the Art Institute of Portland. Two shows, 6:00 and 7:30pm. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome. The place fills up fast, so come early!

The stills are looking great, although several of them are a bit soft. Look forward to seeing it (assuming it ever gets online).

In case of the rods... just have the good guy holding two guns and it'll be his pov shot and paint in the tips of the guns (just kidding) other than the bar stuff... like someone said it could be seeing it on the web... but I wanted to hear audio and find out what the story was about... which in the end is what works... I want to see more...

It's been an insane two months. The screening was a great success. About 350 people showed up, and FOJ got a great response! Since then we've been working on the 5.1 mix, DVD menus, and getting versions encoded for the internet. At long last, I am pleased to present Face of Justice in glorious HD (I recommend the 720p version):

Quicktime (right click and "save as.")
Small (22.7Mb)
Medium (68.6Mb)
Large (124.9Mb)
720p (308.5Mb)
1080p (493Mb)

Should have Windows Media HD versions up in the next day or so. I look forward to hearing what you think of the film!

I don't have a lot to say right now. Admittedly I watched the 1080p SPECIFICALLY for quality and I didn't even have the sound up. I'll have a real post with thoughts on content, etc...

This picture looks extremely nice, you guys. How much post sharpening did you add? I can see it doing a few weird things but MAN this looks really very nice. Congratulations on a very nice looking cinematic piece. Someone's gonna mention (I guess I'm first) the edge softness and such but man, it's really not all that distracting to be completely honest. You deal with the limitations and move on to get the job done and that's what you guys did.

I'm wondering who could tell this was film. I especially love the composition of wide shots here. Can't wait to watch it on the 42" for my story review.

Oh and thanks for sharing the different sizes! Mmm HVX 1080p, after all the noise complainin's said and done? Sure looks friggin' nice.

Thanks! We put a lot of work into getting maximum picture quality. The sharpening is the one thing which I really regret about this project. Patrick and I did extensive testing with the camera and M2 before hand. Unfortunately, neither of us really knew all of the ins and outs of what we were looking at in regard to detail settings, and thus missed a bunch of sharpening artifacts in our image analysis/test footage.

We ended up shooting with Detail: +3, V-Detail: 0, Detail Coring: +2. Then we got into post, and it was pointed out to me how over-sharpened the image was, coming straight out of the camera. Because of this, we didn't end up doing any sharpening in post. Looking back at it, had we known the true implications of those settings, we probably (with the M2) would have gone with something like Detail: -5, V-Detail: -2, Detail Coring somewhere in between -2 and 0, and done quite a bit of sharpening in post.

The edge softness is a bit distracting. Especially on the wider lenses, probably should have pushed in on the ground glass a bit further. That at least would have made things a bit more consistent. Fortunately, most people haven't noticed it.

I can't wait to hear what it looks like on your 42"! The largest thing I've seen the HD versions on is my 19" computer monitor. :( I've been really pleased with how the SD versions have held up projected, and on large TV's, though. It's amazing what a color pass will do to further the illusion.

Thanks for the comments!

I remember when I used the M2 and my Gamma Curve was BPress ritually, my detail level always seemed to be about -2 or so.

HOWEVER... please, dont' think that the sharpening makes the image look bad. On the contrary, I think it helped. It's borderline, just right.

I think, overall, the image quality is pretty nice. Others may think else, but hey it works for me!

Will report (maybe even grab ya a still) of the 42" watch. :D

Hey guys, thanks for the good words! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to look at the final HD version yet :( I lack the facilities, so to speak. Jerry and I worked hard on this film, and I am proud to be a part of it. Jerry did an amazing job with post, color correction and everything and our sound designer, Anthony really did a good job on the sound. It was really cool to see it all come together! BTW, I'm not too bugged by the edge softness- I think it almost mimics the old western style of film ala John Wayne

Speaking of old Westerns, one of the things that turned out really cool was the subtle hotspotting/vignetting that happened with most of the lenses we used. I love the way that lends an older look to the footage.

Patrick, you did an amazing job! Anyone care to guess what the weather/light was like outside when we shot the sheriff's office scenes?

Have you guys locked a poster yet? I'd like to take a swing at it if you can source me your favorite actor images and a few backgrounds.

Hey Erik, thanks for the offer! I'll try to get a few files up for you this afternoon. I've been getting kind of frustrated with trying to put a good one together. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
